The newly endowed Laura Kingsford CNSM Student Research Symposium, named after the retired Beach professor and dean, is giving more than 150 students the chance to present their research. The endowment, a gift from John E. Clark in memory of his late wife and alumna, Elizabeth, will help showcase research projects for many years.

Future child psychologist Evelin Zavala knew that she wanted to go to graduate school, but the way seemed blurry. The McNair Scholars Program, which welcomes first-generation students who want to pursue doctoral studies, is helping her chart a course to her goals. More than 100 Beach students have completed the program since 2017.

“It helped me, as a person, to take challenges as a student,” she said. "It's an open door to take the opportunity.”

Beach for Good: Harvesting Healthy Habits trains CSULB students to teach healthy eating to children and families in Long Beach. The nutrition program is run by CSULB Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation and Leadership Training.

Since 2005, the center has trained more than 300 students while serving thousands of community members.

Two historic sea turtle nests discovered in Southern California have been confirmed to belong to two different endangered olive ridley sea turtles, according to NOAA Fisheries.

Kass Malcor ‘26, the inaugural awardee for the Susan M. Rigney Scholarship, has returned to The Beach to research the history of HIV and AIDS in California. The scholarship’s namesake, Susan Rigney ‘81, had earlier created an endowment for CSULB’s LGBTQ+ Resource Center.

A Beach alumna and student are finalists in “PBS Fine Cut!” “From Farmersville,” directed by Savannah Gasca ‘26, is a finalist in the documentary category. “The Rat Race,” directed by student Sarah Jackson, is a finalist in the animation category.

Dreams Made Here ✨: Disney Legend and Distinguished Alumnus Tony Baxter ’69 turned some of the most ambitious ideas into reality. He co-designed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, developed Star Tours alongside George Lucas and led a team of 100 Imagineers in creating Indiana Jones Adventure.

Reflecting on his accomplishments, Baxter thanked those who helped get him there. One was late CSULB professor Maxine Merlino, who required her students to master perspective, draftsmanship and classical techniques. Over the decades, he consistently relied on the art skills he'd honed at CSULB.
