NHLRC at UCLA

The NHLRC helps develop effective pedagogical approaches to teaching heritage language learners, first by creating a research base and then by pursuing curriculum design, materials development, and teacher education. Heritage learners in America are educated in English and typically become English dominant, but will retain some knowledge of their heritage language and if efforts are made to maintain and develop this languages, a high level of proficiency can be achieved. Compared to traditional foreign language learners, it is often possible for heritage language speakers to acquire impressively high levels of proficiency in a shorter amount of time.

In order to pursue our mission, we hold three main events each year:

  • a research institute

  • a workshop for instructors from all over the U.S. who teach heritage language learners
