It was founded on November 11, 1874, at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York. Our four founders are Helen M. Dodge, Frances E. Adeline Curtis and Mary A. Bingham. They were imaginative and courageous women who cooperated unselfishly as they worked to achieve the same ideals Gamma Phi Beta emphasizes today. Dr. Frank Smalley, a professor at the university, first coined the word "sorority" with

respect to Gamma Phi Beta. Today Gamma Phi Beta has 340 collegiate chapters and alumnae groups and a membership that exceeds 165,000. The Alpha Iota chapter at UCLA was founded in 1924. Vision: "To be a premiere women's organization with a winning spirit through: seeking cultural, demographic and economic diversity, the development of chapter, community and interfraternal leaders, providing programming which addresses issues relevant to women and society, the strengthening of resources, a focus on being member-driven, and management of the organization through volunteerism."
