🔷Bruin Highlight: Past, Present & Future 🔷
🔸This January 2025 we are highlighting Native Bruin Ella Kohler from the Sac and Fox Nation, class of 2024. 🔸
Ella was raised in Ventura County, California, where she currently lives, and is a proud member of the Sac and Fox Nation Tribe of Oklahoma. In the Fall of 2022, she transferred to UCLA from Moorpark College. As a transfer student, Ella aimed to maximize her undergraduate experience, leading her to become actively engaged in the native community on campus. She held a position on the board of the American Indian Student Association (AISA) and contributed to both the student-led Retention program RAIN! (Retention of American Indians Now!) and Outreach AIR (American Indian Recruitment) programs. Through these roles, she was able to promote the success of Native students in higher education by providing mentorship and advocacy, finding great satisfaction in being a supportive resource for her peers. In December 2024, she commenced her role at the First Nations Development Institute (FNDI) in their Pasadena office. As a Program Officer for the California Tribal Fund, one of FNDI's various initiatives, she specifically focuses on supporting California-based, California-Native-led nonprofits and tribal programs. Her responsibilities include overseeing and facilitating projects that emphasize food sovereignty and local control of food systems. Ella is both excited and grateful for the chance to enhance her understanding of California tribal communities and to contribute to the well-being of the original stewards of the land she is privileged to call home.
"My time at UCLA was truly transformative, and I’m deeply grateful for the people who supported and inspired me along the way. The connections I built and the experiences I was fortunate enough to have shaped not only my academic journey but also my personal growth. Having mentors that believed in and encouraged me, as well as being surrounded by such driven and passionate peers, motivated me to step into student leadership roles and embrace every opportunity that came my way. My involvement in AISA was particularly impactful. I learned more about the incredible diversity within our individual cultures, identities, and backgrounds, which allowed me to explore and embrace my own identity in ways I hadn’t before. UCLA will always hold a special place in my heart."
