Congratulations to LACCD Vice Chancellor of Facilities Dr. Leigh Sata on receiving the Leadership Award from the Asian American of Architects and Engineers Association (AAa/e). Dr. Sata was recognized for his outstanding leadership and commitment to student success through his oversight of LACCD’s BuildLACCD Bond Program.

We’re especially proud to celebrate ELAC student Hsu Waddy, a recipient of an AAa/e scholarship! Originally from Myanmar, Hsu moved to pursue her educational dreams, overcoming challenges along the way before discovering her passion for architecture at ELAC. She aspires to transfer to a four-year university and is now one step closer to turning those dreams into reality.

Congratulations to Dr. Sata and Hsu on these well-deserved achievements!

Creating opportunities for student success begins with the people who believe in our students and their potential to achieve greatness!

LACCD Chancellor Dr. Alberto J. Román had the honor of delivering opening remarks at the 57th Annual CCCEOPSA Conference, joining hundreds of dedicated educators, counselors, and student advocates from across California who share a commitment to expanding educational access and opportunity.

The conference served as a powerful reminder of the impact that Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) have on students across our community colleges. Beyond providing resources and support, EOPS professionals help students overcome barriers, navigate challenges, and build pathways toward brighter futures.

At LACCD, we recognize and celebrate the changemakers who work tirelessly to ensure every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

For Political Science major Ti’Ara Francis, education is more than earning a degree; it’s about creating opportunities, serving others, and building a brighter future.

After facing personal and financial hardships following high school, Ti’Ara turned those challenges into motivation to continue her education. She found a home at Los Angeles Southwest College, drawn to its welcoming environment and history rooted in the Civil Rights Movement, a legacy that resonated with her passion for advocacy and social justice.

Since enrolling, Ti’Ara has maintained strong academic standing, participated in student support programs, and discovered her potential as a leader. With encouragement from faculty, she successfully ran to become the next Associated Student Organization President, where she will advocate for her fellow students.

Inspired by those who helped shape Southwest, Ti’Ara hopes to carry that legacy forward through education, advocacy, and leadership. Her journey is a powerful reminder that education can create opportunities, strengthen communities, and empower students to shape the future they envision.

Every family deserves the opportunity to build a brighter future and our student parents are creating new possibilities for themselves and the next generation.

Across LACCD, CalWORKs helps parenting students balance college and family by connecting them with academic support, resources, financial assistance, and a community that believes in their success.

At Los Angeles Southwest College, Chancellor Alberto J. Román heard directly from student parents about their journeys, the challenges they’ve overcome, and the support that keeps them moving forward.

Their stories remind us why this work matters: when we invest in student parents, we invest in families, communities, and generations to come.

Our custodians are at the heart of keeping LACCD’s campuses clean, safe and welcoming for our students and communities every day.

We see you. We hear you. And we are incredibly proud of the work and service you provide to our LACCD community.

Our custodians, represented by SEIU Local 99, play an essential role in creating healthy and welcoming environments where our students can learn and thrive.

In honor of National Custodian Day, we recognize and thank our custodial employees across LACCD, and custodians everywhere, for all that you do.

History is in the making for California students—helping ensure every student has a voice and is supported by the institutions they attend.

With SB 1255 (Reyes) and AB 2374 (Fong) now signed into law, California is taking an important step toward recognizing institutions committed to serving their diverse student communities, an effort LACCD has proudly championed through leadership, advocacy and partnership.

Authored by Senator Eloise Gómez Reyes, SB 1255 establishes a state-level designation for California Hispanic-Serving Institutions, while Assemblymember Mike Fong’s AB 2374 establishes a designation for California Asian American and Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions.

We’re proud to have been part of the advocacy that helped move these efforts forward. Chancellor Alberto J. Román and the LACCD Board of Trustees helped elevate the importance of strengthening support for the students and communities our colleges serve.

Thank you to Senator Reyes and Assemblymember Fong for championing these measures and helping advance pathways that support students as they persist, complete their education and reach their goals.

For Los Angeles City College student Guillermo Cabanellas, one class opened the door to an unexpected journey. He came to LACC in Fall 2025 to complete Calculus II, the final course he needed for TAG eligibility to UC Riverside. What began as a strategic academic decision quickly became much more as Guillermo found a supportive community through LACC’s faculty, counselors, Transfer Center, and programs including OSS, TRIO, Basic Needs, and the LACC Foundation.

While pursuing Nursing and completing Dental Technology prerequisites, Guillermo took on an ambitious course load and ultimately earned admission to every UC campus he applied to, including UCLA and UC Berkeley, along with significant scholarship and honors opportunities. With plans to pursue an MPP/MD pathway, he hopes to combine medicine, research, and public policy to improve healthcare access and outcomes for underserved communities.

Ever wonder what it takes to keep LA’s trains and cars moving?

At LATTC, the next generation of skilled professionals is gaining hands-on experience for careers in transportation.

As one of only a few California community colleges offering programs in these specialized fields, LATTC gives students the opportunity to learn light rail vehicle systems, develop advanced automotive repair skills, and train with the equipment and techniques used across today’s transportation industries.

LACCD Chancellor Alberto J. Román recently visited LATTC’s Advanced Transportation & Manufacturing programs to meet students and see their training in action.

And this is just one of the many career pathways across LACCD! Follow along as we visit our colleges and spotlight the hands-on programs preparing students with skills for the industries of today and tomorrow
