Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies at Cal State L.A.

Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies at Cal State L.A. Courses in each of these areas examine how geographic, racial, cultural, gender, sexual and class dynamics shape Chicana(o) and Latina(o) communities.

The Department of Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies (CLS) offers an innovative interdisciplinary curriculum that includes courses in education, health sciences, history, literature, political science, psychology, art and culture. The Department of Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies at California State University, Los Angeles offers an interdisciplinary program which includes a transnational approach to

understanding the historical experiences and contemporary social status of the US population of Latin American origin. Our approach provides the tools the tools to conduct research and critical thinking in Education, Sociology, History, Social Movements, Popular Music and Popular Culture, and Literature. The department curriculum allows students to engage in theories, methodologies, technologies, and research approaches within the field. Students receive an education that prepares them to become effective professionals and leaders in a multicultural society and global context.

Join Dr. Amina Humphrey and students Victor Altamirano, Ricardo Rodriguez-Ramirez, Chinuaogu Onwuelingo, and Daisy Sanchez from the Ethnic Studies and Social Justice Department at El Camino College. In this action research-oriented presentation, attendees will learn about engaging and empowering literacy practices for social justice learning and actions via Ethnic Studies children’s picture books for ages 3-10. Learn about the vast, diverse, and fascinating Ethnic Studies histories and cultures of African/Diasporic/African American, Native/Indigenous, Latinx/Chicanx, Asian/API, and Q***r experiences, told in picture books.
