Established in 1919, the USC School of Architecture offers undergraduate and graduate architectural studies in the context of a world-class research university. The first accredited school of architecture in Southern California, USC counts among its alumni, two Pritzker-Prize-winners, Frank Gehry ’84 and Thom Mayne ’69. Undergraduate students can choose between the 5-year, professional Bachelor of Architecture, the 4-year Bachelor of Science, and the Bachelor of Science in GeoDesign. At the graduate level, the School offers Master's programs in a diverse range of disciplines (architecture, landscape architecture, building science, and heritage conservation), as well as a unique selection of dual degrees. Students at all levels can take advantage of global studies opportunities in Europe, Asia, and North & South America. Additionally, one of the particular advantages of being a USC Architecture student is the School’s relationship with the USC Architectural Guild, an organization that lends professional guidance and financial support to students, faculty, and alumni, as well as providing a vital link to the profession. All of this (and more) takes place in Los Angeles, a highly original, diverse city that challenges preconceptions and serves as an incubator for new ideas and practices.

Hyperpractice Los Angeles is a symposium that will examine a new mode of working which the field is only beginning to name Hyperpractice, practice that happens through connections among parallel offices, across their approaches to media, authorship, technique, reputation, and risk.

The symposium brings together practitioners, scholars, and cultural producers to study this condition candidly across office archives, contracts, orphaned web addresses, and credit lines, and to ask what parallel fields such as music, film, and fashion can teach architecture about collective production.

The 2nd event in collaboration between the Consulate General of Mexico and the USC School of Architecture, Expanded Borders brings together practitioners from the Tijuana–Los Angeles corridor to discuss how a new generation of architects is expanding the limits of the discipline past geopolitical and disciplinary boundaries by building binational platforms for research, curation, and education.

Across the Tijuana–Los Angeles corridor, a generation of architects has extended the limits of their discipline by building platforms alongside their practice: research laboratories, curatorial spaces, schools, and binational convening programs. Expanded Borders brings together practitioners from the corridor to ask what an architect does when the studio is not enough, and how a practice expands geographically and disciplinarily at the same time, operating on both sides of the border. The panel proposes that the most consequential border of the corridor is not the geopolitical one, already extensively documented, but the disciplinary border that separates the architect from the curator, the researcher, the editor, and the educator.
