Military Acceptance Project

Military Acceptance Project An expert advisory panel comprised of leaders in the military and in LGBT health will help guide this project.

The Military Acceptance Project is a joint research effort between the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of Southern California (UCLA). It is one of the first Department of Defense-funded studies aimed at learning about the experiences and well-being of active duty le***an, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) service members in the US military. Investigators from the USC

School of Social Work’s LGBT Health Equity Initiative and Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families, along with investigators from the Department of Social Welfare in the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, will join forces to conduct qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys with LGBT service members from each of the four military branches (Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines). Information gained in this study will be used to make recommendations to the DOD on what they can to do improve the integration, acceptance, health and well-being of LGBT service members.

"It is important to note that the president’s new policy isn’t about stopping something before it happens. Rather, it seeks to undo something that already is deeply established. Indeed, the U.S. military is currently the largest employer of transgender people in the world. To say that the thousands of transgender service members actively serving in the U.S. have no place is to say that our current military is unfit to defend this great country."

Check out this opinion piece in The Advocate magazine about the President's threats to transgender service members, written by one of the Military Acceptance Project's leaders Dr. Carl Castro.

As we face aggression around the globe, the president continues to push stunningly bad military policy.

Have you heard? Military Acceptance Project has transitioned! We are now housed with the USC Center for Innovation and Research on Veterans & Military Families-CIR. As part of MAP 2.0, researchers from USC and University of California, Los Angeles, are conducting a two-year Defense Department-funded research project of active-duty LGBT service members. The study explores how LGBT individuals are integrated into the military; determines if health disparities exist between them and their heterosexual counterparts; and develops recommendations for better assimilation of LGBT service members to promote military readiness.
