The Ben Culley Society of Occidental College

The Ben Culley Society of Occidental College The Occidental College Legacy Society recognizes individuals who have arranged a future gift to Oxy.

During his thirty-nine year association with Occidental College, Ben Culley had a profound impact on the lives of countless students. He was famous for knowing the names and backgrounds of students even before he met them. His ability to recall details even years later was legendary. Ben once said his job was "to shake the students out of a form of scholastic lethargy - to become an irritant...to

do whatever it takes to get them to act." The esteem in which he is held by thousands of prominent Occidental alumni is a testament to his success at accomplishing that goal. Ben Culley envisioned greatness for Occidental and devoted his many years at the College (whether as a mathematics professor, Dean of Men, or later as Dean of Students) toward realizing this vision. He cared deeply about the College and its future, so much so that he set an example by providing a generous gift through his estate. To this day his generosity continues to support scholarships and endowed programs in the performing arts. It is, therefore, most fitting that in 1994 the Board of Trustees established an important deferred giving recognition society in his name. The purpose of the Ben Culley Society is to salute donors whose foresight, like Dean Culley's, has led them to make a commitment to the College beyond their lifetime. This Society recognizes some of the College’s most generous donors during their lifetime for a gift the College will realize when they are gone. Known as "deferred giving" or "planned giving" these gifts can be in the form of a bequest, life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, gift annuities, or retained life estate gifts.
