UCLA AIDS Institute & Center for AIDS Research

UCLA AIDS Institute & Center for AIDS Research In 1981, UCLA physicians reported the very first cases of what was described as “newly acquired immunodeficiency” — the disease entity we now know as AIDS. Y.

That discovery — and the subsequent exponential explosion of AIDS cases in Los Angeles, around the country, and around the world — led to the formation of the world-acclaimed UCLA AIDS Institute in 1992. Under the direction of internationally respected virologist, Dr. Irvin S. Chen, the Institute continues to provide a unique, multidisciplinary environment for researchers who are assailing HIV fro

m a dozen disciplines and directions. Institute members include faculty working in virology and immunology, genetics, cancer, neurology, ophthalmology, epidemiology, social science, public health, nursing, and disease prevention. Their studies are carried out in several locations on the UCLA Westwood campus, in addition to community settings, major medical centers in greater Los Angeles, and scores of international locations including India, China, Brazil, and sub-Saharan Africa.

The UCLA CFAR will be submitting a proposal for renewal of the CFAR for a 7th round of 5-year funding by NIH. We are beginning the process now for preparing the proposal, which is due to NIH in July 2017. Please note, we anticipate that USC will be joining UCLA in this application, and that if/once the two institutions sign the appropriate agreements, the CFAR will be renamed the Los Angeles CFAR. This RFA will be made available to both sites and we invite applications for New and Re-competing Cores from both sites. In some instances, a Core may be significantly stronger by interaction at both sites—please consider this as you are developing your proposals.

At this point, we are inviting Concept Proposals for New and Re-competing Cores. The overall CFAR recompetition is expected to be particularly competitive this year and as such, this RFA is also a competitive application, and there are no guarantees with respect to final core inclusion or core leadership positions. It is important to think about how to improve upon what has been done in the past to align the CFAR with NIH’s new priority areas.

• Jan 30, 2017: Concept proposal submission deadline

Information can be found on the UCLA CFAR website http://aidsinstitute.ucla.edu/cfar.

We receive support from the Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR) program at the National Institutes of Health.Read more about the center >
