“I can’t think of a better way of keeping her legacy alive.”

Valerie Gómez, a Provost Postdoctoral Fellow at the Pullias Center for Higher Education and founder of Latina Grad Guide, co-hosted the inaugural Latina Scholars 5K on Sept. 19.

The event raised more than $10,000 for graduate scholarships through Latina Grad Guide and the TELACU Education Foundation.

Now in its fifth year, the scholarship is open to Latina graduate and professional students at any university. It honors Gómez’s grandparents, Jesús and María, who immigrated from El Salvador believing education could create a better future.

Inspired by her grandparents’ belief in education, Valerie Gómez PhD is helping Latina students pursue their academic goals.

Educators empower young learners to solve real-world challenges right in their own schoolyards.

FutureMakers42 is a professional learning series for elementary teachers developed by the USC STEM Center at the USC Rossier School of Education.

The program was led by Shanta Smith, USC Rossier associate professor of clinical education, and Kendrick Davis, co-director of the USC Rossier STEM Center.

“After three years of working alongside the teachers at 42nd Street, FutureMakers42 felt like the natural next step,” said Smith. “We wanted to build something with them, not bring something to them.”

USC Rossier STEM Center program, FutureMakers42, put engineering design into math and science class at 42nd Street Elementary School.
