Many children in the United States are born with severe oral and facial defects such as cleft lip or palate that can interfere with a child's ability to function. Certain surgical procedures are required to correct these anomalies, but are considered “elective” by insurance companies. ELSA would require private group and individual health insurance plans to cover the medically necessary services to correct these anomalies so children can breathe, speak and eat normally. The bill aims to cover inpatient and outpatient care, reconstructive services and procedures, as well as adjunctive dental, orthodontic, or prosthodontic support. It specifically exempts any cosmetic surgeries. Please help support the ADA and ASDA’s backing of the bill by contacting your member of congress today! ADA members can contact congressmen via this link: https://tinyurl.com/yyg36rgk. Non ADA members can find more information on how to contact your local congressman via the National Foundation For Ectodermal Dysplasia website listed here: https://tinyurl.com/y4vdxld7

Don't forget to check out UCLA Cleft Palate & Craniofacial Clubs first event!

We are accepting any new or used children's toys and picture or Spanish books in decent condition. Donation bins are labeled and located at the Biomedical Library Front Desk, Dental Student Lounge, and Dental Student Affairs Office (A0-111 CHS).

We are collecting items to donate to Thousand Smiles, an organization that facilitates cleft palate and other craniofacial services to those in need. Each August, November, and February a group of UCLA faculty and residents team up with Thousand Smiles and head to Ensenada, Mexico where they provide services to families who come for treatment from many miles away. The procedures are long, and they are looking for something to distract the children while they await treatment.
