Social Connection Lab Research Opportunity

"Feeling socially connected with others has a critical impact on our physical and mental well-being. At the Social Connection Lab (SoCoLab), we study various facets of social connection, such as what helps people feel connected to others, what distinguishes people who are great at connecting with others, and what factors contribute to social disconnection. Some of our prior and ongoing projects investigate the associations between subjective and objective social (dis)connection and neural responses, the neural and psychological drivers of information sharing, and the neural correlates of social influence.

In answering these questions, we take a multi-disciplinary approach, using theories and methods from psychology, neuroscience, network science, and communication studies. We hope that by better understanding the mechanisms that underlie social connection, we can help people lead happier, healthier lives.

To learn more about our research, visit our lab website: socolab.org

RAs have the opportunity to contribute to multiple parts of our research process and develop new research skills. RAs are also encouraged to attend our weekly lab meetings to share ideas and learn more about what other lab members are up to.

Qualifications:
● Commit to contributing to the lab for at least two consecutive semesters
● Devote at least 8-10 hours per week
● Strong organizational and communication skills
● Can work independently and reliably, is punctual
● Interested in social connection and loneliness, and motivated to contribute to research on them

If you are interested, please email Jacob Zimmerman, the lab manager, at [email protected]."

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY: MOTIVATION AND EDUCATION RESEARCH GROUP (MERG) & CENTER FOR EDUCATION POLICY, EQUITY, AND GOVERNANCE (CEPEG)

The Motivation and Education Research Group (MERG) led by Dr. Erika Patall and Dr. Adam Kho from the Center for Education Policy, Equity, and Governance (CEPEG) in the Rossier School of Education are seeking enthusiastic, committed students with an interest in education to assist with research this school year. Students who become involved in our research have the opportunity to contribute to and co-author a study focusing on the influences that impact Black and Hispanic/Latinx student achievement. Tasks may include identifying and screening literature, reviewing literature, and meta-analytic coding. We seek students who want to be active members of our research team and anticipate wanting to continue in a relevant field in graduate school or as a career. Students must be willing to volunteer 5-10 hours of their time per week (on average). Students who wish to continue work with MERG and/or CEPEG beyond this year may also do so on either a voluntary basis or for course credit.

The core mission of the MERG is to understand the nature of students’ motivation and the educational environments and practices that can support student motivation. We conduct meta-analyses, intervention research, and survey research. We conduct research online, in laboratory settings, and in the field, working closely with secondary (middle and high school) school teachers and students as part of the process.

The mission of the CEPEG is to conduct rigorous, practice-relevant research that advances educational equity for K-12 students and to create partnerships that ensure education policies, practices, and governance structures are guided by evidence and careful analysis. We are committed to conducting research with consequence, responding to the field, making research accessible, and training the next generation of educational leaders. We conduct quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research online and in the field.

The Story Collider

SCIENCE STORYTELLING OPPORTUNITY! Do you have a true, personal story about science that you'd like to share with other people? If so, The Story Collider is looking for storytellers for its upcoming live shows and you could be one of them!

WHAT'S A SCIENCE STORYTELLING SHOW? Think of it like a stand-up comedy show, but with people talking about how science has impacted their lives in a way that can make the audience laugh, cry, or anywhere in between. Producers' favorite stories from each live show (which might include yours!) end up on The Story Collider podcast, which you can check out for tons of examples: storycollider.org/podcasts

COOL! HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? If you have a story idea you'd like to pitch, you can submit it at this link: storycollider.org/submissions. If your pitch is selected, you'll work with the PSYC department's very own Dr. Leslie Berntsen to help develop your story and get it ready to perform at a live show (which you can invite all your friends to so they can cheer you on). If you have any questions or would like to learn more about this opportunity or science storytelling more generally, you can get in touch with Dr. Berntsen at [email protected]
