Tisch West Vertical Microdrama Panel: A Conversation About the Business, Opportunities, and Growth of Microdramas

By now you have probably heard about vertical microdramas, the hot new bite-sized, serialized video storytelling format with a projected $26 billion global business that has the legacy Hollywood studios, tech companies, and a slew of high profile startups diving into the space.

If you are a filmmaker- director, writer, producer, actor, crew- this is a rapidly growing part of the entertainment industry that, if you have not already encountered, likely will soon. It is also a format ripe with opportunities for filmmakers with longer career aspirations in film and television.

Join Tisch West for an in-person panel discussing the business, opportunities, and future growth of vertical microdramas. We will cover the current state of the vertical microdrama business, where the business will be going, what the process of making a microdrama is like, what opportunities for filmmakers exist in the space, and advice for how aspiring directors, writers, actors, producers, and crew can get and grow their opportunities in the space.

The panel will feature acclaimed microdrama director Alison-Eve Hammersley, prolific microdrama writer Adrienne Argenbright, head of production at CandyJar, Lily Darragh Harty, and creative producer at ReelShort, Gorby Shih. Between the four of them, they have directed, written, produced, and overseen dozens of the most successful vertical microdrama series for many of the biggest microdrama studios.

Documentary Filmmaking Panel: A Conversation About the Business, Opportunities, and Craft of Docs

Tisch West invites you to an in-person Documentary Filmmaking Panel on March 22, 4pm with Tisch alumni: Amanda Rohlke (Producer, Deaf President Now!, Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!, Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones), Miranda Sherman (Producer, Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, Child Star, Elton John & Brandi Carlile - Who Believes in Angels? Stories from the Edge of Creation), and Brendan Bellomo (Director, the Oscar nominated Porcelain War). The panel will be moderated by Olivia Kuan (Director, The Herricanes).

They will discuss the current state of the documentary business and what kind of opportunities exist in the space for directors, producers, editors, and even writers. The panel will also touch upon the myriad of vastly different ways and styles documentaries can be made, what the distribution landscape currently looks like, and the unique challenges of making a documentary. Whether you are a filmmaker that has always had their heart set on docs, or someone that has primarily been working in the scripted/fictional realm and is looking to see how the doc world can grow your opportunities- this panel is for you!

Come mix and mingle with your fellow Tisch West alumni and support a good cause! Join us at the bar Sorry Not Sorry on Sunday March 9 at 3:30pm where we will be enjoying drinks and collecting monetary donations via a GoFundMe account created specifically for this fundraiser event.

All proceeds will be given to Mutual Aid LA- an organization that provides essential goods and services for those affected in the Palisades and Altadena fires and directly supports various on-the-ground relief efforts.

Suggested donation is $15 (please make donation at the GoFundMe page, link can be found at the event page), but if you can give more, more is always appreciated. We will be selling raffle tickets and giving away swag and prizes!

On February 23, 2025 join us for Tisch West's Casting 101 Panel: A Conversation About the Casting Process. This is an incredible panel and a don't-miss for any director, producer, actor, or anyone interested in the career and process of a casting professional.

Tisch West invites you to an in-person panel with Claire Koonce (Casting Director, Emmy winner, Beef Season 1), Sunday Boling Kennedy (Casting Director, Hello My Name is Doris, Waitress), and Elizabeth Brown (Casting Associate, The Morning Show, The Last of Us). The panel will be moderated by Lisa Steen (Director, Late Bloomers).

They will discuss the process and career of casting professionals, and how they work with directors, producers, and actors to bring together the most dynamic cast. Join this enlightening conversation at the NYU LA Academic Center, meet fellow alumni before and after the panel, and enjoy light refreshments.

Panel will take place on February 23 at 4pm at the NYU LA Academic Center (145 S. Fairfax Ave, Suite 405, Los Angeles, CA 90036)

Calling all Tisch and NYU alumni in Los Angeles! We're excited to get the community back together and see each other again, as well as welcome all the new alumni that have moved to Los Angeles in the last few years! Come join us for a relaxing day of good summer fun, catching up with old friends, and making new ones. Bringing chairs, blankets, games, and sunscreen is encouraged. This event is free and we will have snacks and light refreshments as well! Please RSVP only if you think you will very likely attend. While there will be no RSVP cut-off limit, we want to get an accurate RSVP count.

Parking: The park has a free parking lot that can be entered on Beverly Blvd between The Grove Dr and N Gardener St. There is also meter parking in the neighborhood and parking structures at the nearby The Grove and Farmer’s Market.
