Congratulations to alum Pamela Winfrey - her short script "It All Leads to the Lemon Scene" is being read by the British-based "Scriptwriters and Co" on Oct 16, and "Quaranteen: A Ghost Story", written with fellow MFA alum John Lewis, was named runner up for the Great Lakes International Film Fest audience favorite award!

Congratulations to MFA Mentor Jule Selbo - her crime novel "6 Days: A Dee Rommel Mystery" has been shortlisted for The Clue Book Awards which recognize emerging new talent and outstanding works in the genre of Suspense and Thriller Mysteries. It's the 5th book in her Dee Rommel series.

On Saturday, August 8, our Executive Director Dr. Rosanne Welch was the guest academic providing the introduction to a screening of "Clueless" (written by Amy Heckerling) in the newly renovated theatre of the Autry Museum of the American West. Her lecture pointed out comparisons between Cher, the lead character of 'Clueless', and Jane Austen’s Emma, showing how Heckerling’s film is a solid example of the female gaze. Dr. Welch also touched on how Heckerling embedded her own progressive ideas into her main character, from the fact that her high school was named for abolitionist and Transcendentalist Bronson Alcott to Cher’s comment on immigration.

It was a month of meeting up with MFA alums as our Executive Director Dr. Rosanne Welch reconnected with MFA alum Rene Ryman (Class of 2025) before a presentation on the writing career of Susan Harris at this year's international Screenwriting Research Network conference held at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, UK. Rene had traveled in from France where she serves as an Assistant Professor at the American University of Paris.

When an MFA alum (Kristiina Davidjants, MFA Class of 2023) flew 5,700 miles to Los Angeles from Estonia to present her film at an international festival of course we had to meet up between screenings.

We were honored to have the amazing writers Valerie Woods (The Crossover, The Big Cigar, Sweet Magnolias); Jessica O’Toole (XO, Kitty; The Summer I Turned Pretty); John Whittington (Remarkably Bright Creatures, LEGO Batman); and Rhiana Yazzie (Dark Winds) speak on their experiences!

Congratulations to MFA alum Marco Antonio Rodriguez (Class of 2021) - at last week’s Equity Wing Jeff Awards (for excellence in the Chicago Theatre scene) Rodriguez received the Best New Work award for the Goodman Theatre production of "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" which he adapted from the 2007 novel written by Dominican American author Junot Díaz.
