In 2024, Brendan Griffiths joined Otis College of Art and Design as Chair of the Graphic Design BFA, Graphic Design MFA, and Illustration BFA programs. Griffiths recently sat down to talk about his goals for those programs, the Concept Art emphasis that will soon be reintroduced at the College, and how advances in artificial intelligence will impact the marketplace for Otis graduates: “I envision expanding our curriculum to more deeply integrate emerging technologies while maintaining a strong foundation in traditional skills and processes that we’re already very strong in.”

Tom Van Sant’s (’57 MFA Fine Arts) GeoSphere Project was the first cloud-free, high-resolution satellite composite of Earth and a predecessor to Google Earth. It pioneered “digital twin” technology: creating virtual replicas to understand real-world systems.

Now on view at Santa Monica’s 18th Street Arts Center through February 1, 2025, An Earth Twin at the Digital Dawn celebrates Van Sant’s groundbreaking project in conjunction with PST ART: Art & Science Collide. Over the past four years, students in Otis College’s Creative Action program have researched Van Sant’s legacy and developed new ways to engage viewers with his vision. For the first time in 20 years, the aural sculpture ear(th) by Steve Roden (’86 BFA Fine Arts), who passed away last year, has been faithfully recreated as part of the exhibition Energy Fields: Vibrations of the Pacific. Co-presented by Fulcrum Arts and Chapman University, the show is on view now through January 19, 2024 as part of The Getty’s initiative PST ART: Art & Science Collide. Otis College of Art and Design recently announced Em Cadenas Calvo (’26 Product Design) as the inaugural recipient of the Matthew Rolston Scholarship Fund for Product and Fashion Design.

The fund was launched with Rolston, an acclaimed photographer, filmmaker, creative director, and artist, to support the education of students in the Product Design and Fashion Design programs. “Being financially independent is both empowering and has also become my greatest challenge. The Matthew Rolston Scholarship would diminish the financial burdens I face, allowing me to allocate the money and energy to provide any resources I need to fuel my creative development,” says Calvo. Every year Otis College’s Career Services department surveys recent graduates about their employment experience after leaving the College. The most recent data—for the Class of 2023—shows a 96% employment rate, with a majority of those surveyed (88%) getting jobs within six months of graduating. Over 40% of students secured employment while still in school, and nearly 90% are now working in an art- or design-related field.
