Adytum on High: Rudy Feldman (Y 1951)

Brother Feldman, the Golden Boy of Red Sanders national champion UCLA football teams in the 1950s, passed to the Adytum on High on Oct. 20, his brother Fred reports.

Rudy later coached college football and worked in the front office of the San Diego Chargers.

His legend will burn bright!

Graduate of 2021, went to Benedictine, a Div 3 school in Georgia to start coaching, went to Oregon last year!

My name is Adam Barraza. I am currently working with University of Oregon’s football program assisting in coaching the Defensive Backs. I have recently completed my Masters in Business Administration at Benedictine College while coaching the Running Back unit.

Prior to my move to BC, in undergrad, I attended Palomar College and earned three AAs before transferring to UCLA and earning a degree in history.

Adam Barraza – Barraza joined Oregon ahead of the 2024 season as a defensive assistant and handled a wide range of responsibilities on defense. Prior to the 2025 season he was promoted to assistant cornerbacks coach and has continued in that role.

Fifteen years ago, when Kendall was diagnosed at just 2 years old, T1D management looked completely different.

Her childhood was filled with 15-20 finger pricks a day, 10-12 insulin shots a day, and constant monitoring without any technology to assist.

Today:
Kendall now wears a continuous glucose monitor connected to a closed-loop automated insulin delivery system that can continuously monitor her glucose and automatically adjust insulin. Technology that once sounded like a futuristic “artificial pancreas” is now part of her everyday life. Breakthrough T1D played an important role in the research and regulatory work that helped make automated insulin delivery possible.

In just a couple of weeks, Kendall will begin using Afrezza, a rapid-acting inhaled insulin, which the FDA approved in May 2026 for children and adolescents ages 6+ with T1D. For Kendall, we’re hopeful this will give her another tool to quickly address stubborn highs and spend more time in range, without having to stop what she’s doing to treat high blood sugar.

We are getting closer to treatments that could fundamentally change T1D forever
Breakthrough T1D is currently helping accelerate multiple approaches to replacing the insulin-producing beta cells destroyed by T1D, including manufactured islet-cell therapies and gene-edited cells designed to evade the immune system.
Some of these therapies are already in human clinical trials, with the ultimate goal of restoring insulin production without the need for lifelong insulin or broad immunosuppression.
Breakthrough T1D’s new Project ACT is specifically focused on accelerating these cell therapies toward people living with T1D.

Fifteen years ago, we hoped Kendall would someday have better tools.

Today, she does.

And we’re fundraising because we want something even better: a future without T1D at all.

Upsilon crushes in Maryland
Brothers attended the UCLA game in Maryland and brought home a 50-point victory! Shades of Cade! Just like the Toledo days!

Some friendships are measured by the distance brothers will travel to be together.

Led by Alfred Hernandez, Upsilon brothers Sean Bloch, Steve Clarence, Lance Fuchs, Brad Reichard, Ed Rhee, Tom Soto, Matt Sumrow, Jason Won, John Yipp joined from across the country in Washington, D.C., as their UCLA Bruins took on the Maryland Terrapins.

Recent graduate and new alumnus Michael Gallagher joined the Upsilon group, and t Alfred’s wife, Estella, and Tom Soto’s son, James were also in attendance. David Riley was missed because of a last-minute change in plans.

Before game day, the brothers visited Capitol Hill, where the staffs of U.S. Representative Burgess Owens and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz welcomed them. Special thanks to Congressman Owens’ staff for arranging a Capitol tour that included the Speaker’s Balcony.

Decades after UCLA, these brothers continue to show up for one another and for Upsilon, supporting today’s chapter advisors while cultivating tomorrow’s alumni leaders.

That’s lifelong brotherhood.

Dr. Kent Shoji (Y 1964) and his wife Ginny in Croatia for a lovely summer vacation.
Dr. Shoji is still a working Emergency Room surgeon at UCLA, saving lives every day!
