Today's spotlight shines on Diego Montoya! The incredibly talented fashion and costume designer based in New York City who will be one of the ten artists featured in our fall exhibition, That's So Major! Read on to learn more about him and his incredible accomplishments as an artist:

Born in Lima Peru, he immigrated with his family at a young age to Miami Florida, which remains a continued source of color and inspiration for his designs. Early notable works include textile installations and exhibition designs for MIXNYC Q***r Experimental Film Festival, Superfine! House of Art and Design in Miami Beach, and the Leslie Lohman Museum of Art. In 2017, Montoya's costumes were used for the world premiere of The Power of Emotion: The Apartment at the Abrons Art Center in New York. Now Montoya's studio is a mainstay for some of Ru Paul's Drag Race's most celebrated queens, frequently dressing Sasha Velour, Bob the Drag Queen, Jinkx Monsoon, Jimbo, and more. He was the costume designer for 4 seasons of HBO's series We're Here which earned him two Creative Arts Emmy Awards. In 2025 several of his gowns and costumes were celebrated in the exhibition Resplendent Dreams: Reawakening Rococo at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
