Lectures to my Students by Charles H. Spurgeon, foreword by Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. is available now!

Few books have shaped generations of pastors like Lectures to My Students. In these addresses to his ministerial students, Spurgeon combines theological depth with hard-won pastoral wisdom. He warns against spiritual pride, calls for disciplined study, insists on doctrinal substance, and presses preachers to depend wholly on the Spirit of God. Spurgeon sets before aspiring ministers a high and serious calling. He insists that the preacher's character matters as much as his competence. He urges holiness, clarity, courage, and perseverance in the face of criticism, fatigue, and cultural pressure. For those preparing for ministry, and for those already carrying its burdens, this volume remains a bracing and steady guide to preaching Christ and caring for his church.

“I want you to have the real thing in your life.”

In today’s chapel, SBC President W***y Rice preached from 1 Kings 14, warning against settling for a faith and ministry that only look impressive on the outside. Rehoboam replaced Solomon’s gold shields with bronze, a picture of choosing something inferior while maintaining the appearance of greatness.

May we pursue what is authentic, lasting, and grounded in God’s truth.

A new academic year begins with a reminder of what will last.

At Convocation, Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. preached from 2 Peter 3, calling our community to consider the coming day of the Lord and the promise of a new heavens and a new earth where righteousness dwells.

What we do this semester matters because Christ has given His people work to do while we wait for that day.

We study. We teach. We serve. We preach. We prepare. And until Christ returns, may the Lord find us faithful.

Fall Convocation marks the beginning of another academic year, and another opportunity to faithfully pursue the calling Christ has given us.

Today, Dr. R. Albert Mohler Jr. reminded our community from 2 Peter 3 that all we know and build in this present age will one day pass away. Yet that truth does not make our work meaningless, it gives it greater purpose.

We study, teach, preach, serve, and prepare for ministry because we are waiting for the new heavens and new earth where righteousness dwells.

A new semester begins. Until that day, may the Lord find us faithful.

“How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word.”

As another year of teaching and learning begins, we’re reminded that we stand on a foundation we did not lay ourselves.

We have received a rich heritage of Christian faithfulness, and by God’s grace, we seek to faithfully carry it forward, one generation to the next.

The Great Commission is at the heart of what we do at Southern.

Last night, students gathered for Great Commission Night to hear from faculty about this year’s mission trips through the Bevin Center. Students had the opportunity to learn about each trip, ask questions, and connect with the faculty who will lead these trips.

We’re looking forward to seeing how the Lord uses these trips and the students who participate in them.

Visit the Bevin Center website to learn more about this year’s mission trips!

Dr. Andrew Walker did not set out to become a dean. He set out to help Christians understand how theology shapes the way we live.

Now, as Dean of the School of Theology, he is bringing that same conviction to the work of equipping pastors and ministry leaders. For Walker, sound theology and faithful ethics belong together, and theological education carries a responsibility to prepare leaders who will faithfully teach and live out the gospel.

Read more about Dr. Walker's calling, his vision for Southern's School of Theology, and his heart for the students he now serves.
