UofL Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

UofL Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Louisville

Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies is the interdisciplinary examination of women, gender , and sexuality across cultures and epochs. Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies addresses significant omissions in traditional scholarship by examining the history, contributions and accomplishments of women and by studying the ways gender has structured intellectual and social life. Women's, Gender and

Sexuality Studies calls attention to how issues of gender intersect with other structures of power such as race, class, and sexualities.

Steal Away Medicine: Herbs, Autonomy, and the Right to Heal
Herbal medicine has never been just about plants. For enslaved African Americans, it was one of the few tools available for caring for the body, the spirit, and one another โ€” practiced in stolen hours, in the dark, and in the margins of a system that refused to recognize their full humanity. Drawing from slave narratives, ethnobotanical research, and the enduring practices of African American healing traditions, clinical herbalist and adjunct professor of African American Herbalism at Spelman College, Selima Harleston Lust, explores what it means to tend to yourself and each other when no one else recognizes the needs or wants of your inner life. You'll encounter stories of everyday decisions, small, yet deeply meaningful acts of nurturing that reveal a deeper framework of healing for modern times: one rooted in skill, relationship, and a refusal to surrender. The heart of the workshop is hands-on medicine making. Participants will be introduced to a selection of plants drawn from this living tradition, explore what each one offers the body, mind and spirit, and leave with a handcrafted herbal preparation to take home.

Today the UofL Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department hosted 8th graders from Nativity Academy at St, Boniface, a private middle school located by the UofL Health Sciences campus.

Dr. Tami Harbolt was an administrator at Nativity from 2011-2018 and was happy to organize a day for the students to visit Belknap campus.

The students were able to meet former Nativity students who are currently enrolled at UofL, including WGST alumni Ava Rowan and UofL football player, Blake Ruffin. Yahaira Perez Molina, a Political Science major, led the students on a tour of campus and invited Black and Latinx fraternities and sororities to the event, and several departments sent representatives to meet with the 8th graders.

The day culminated with a fun activity led by WGST MA student, Robin Thurman about Women's history! WGST wants to also thank the staff at the BAE for hosting, Athletics for awesome swag, and CraftHouse Pizza for donating lunch!

The Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department would like to express the Department's immense pride about our student panel that presented at the Community Engaged Learning Symposium, held at the Shelby Campus.

Congratulations and Salute to our students (From left to right: Ginny Duncan, Lea Clark, Robin Thurman, Sierra Sheard, Sophie Amaya, and Lauren Stone) who worked together to seamlessly present their process in conducting transformative research with Sweet Evening Breeze and Up With Women.

Our blossoming scholars shared their reflections and observations on what for some was their first experience with community-based research methodology. We thank Jessica Eggleston from Public Health for moderating the panel, and it was delightful to see the Dogs in Society instructor meet our wonderful WGST students as well!!

UofL Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies professor, Dr. Tami Harbolt accompanied Bridget Kelly, Robin Thurman, and Savannah Dowell, three of our departmentโ€™s seniors, to an off campus visit to the Brown School. They visited two senior seminar classes at the high school, where Robin, Bridget, and Savannah led an hour-long presentation on Women's History, alongside discussing the advantages of earning an interdisciplinary liberal arts degree.

In commenting on today, Dr. Harbolt states: โ€œI was not only impressed with their professionalism; I was also impressed when each introduced their personal lists of affiliated causes and works. From support for sustainability, to urban youth, to individuals with HIV, each of our departmental representatives exhibited the attributes that make our department meaningful and impactful. They were confident and engaging speakers, respectful to the younger students, and created an interactive trivia game that kept their audience engaged. At no point did I feel the need to step in and guide them because they were leading the session with teamwork, cooperation, and great humor.โ€
