This week in DES 106 Foundation 3D Design, students tried lost wax casting. Guided by mechanical engineer and AMIST Lab Manager Justin Gillham, they used the SCI to mold their 3D prints and cast wax copies.

Next week: plaster molds, melted-out wax, and molten glass fired in a kiln to finish the piece. It's the same principle behind metal casting and injection molding!

Big congrats to Speed School's Dr. Xiaomei Wang, who just landed her second NSF grant this year! Her new project will help figure out how engineering students should learn to code now that AI tools are part of the job.

Working alongside her are Dr. Campbell Bego and Dr. Long Nguyen. Check out the full story here:

Dr. Xiaomei Wang, assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, has earned her second National Science Foundation grant this year for a project examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping the way engineering students learn to code.

Congratulations to Dr. Rui Yu, assistant professor of computer science and engineering at Speed School, on landing a $481,101 NSF award! His research is teaching AI to understand physics the way humans do, like knowing a stack of boxes is about to tip over.
