Joshua Schmidt (𝗕𝗦 𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿) 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝟲𝟱 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀-𝗕𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 (𝗖𝗕𝗬𝗫) 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺!

CBYX is a bilateral exchange program of the U.S. Congress and German Bundestag (Parliament). The program is administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs through non-profit implementing partners such as Cultural Vistas.

While in Germany, Joshua will attend a two-month intensive language course, study at a German university, and complete an internship. Participants are usually placed with host families throughout Germany, where they act as citizen ambassadors of the United States, promoting a positive image of the U.S. abroad, creating lifelong friendships, and professional connections to enhance German-American relations.

Joshua was recognized recently by Provost Katie Cardarelli at the UofL's Honors Convocation Awards ceremony. Also present were Interim Dean of Speed School of Engineering Dr. Kevin Walsh, Assoc Dean Dr. Erin Ge**er, Executive Director of Admissions/Community Engagement Dr. Jonathan Hughes, Ph.D., and Department Chair Dr. Pratik Parikh.

Pablo Andres Zuniga (𝗣𝗵𝗗 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲) 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱!

During the conference, he participated in the 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗜𝘁! 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, where he presented a poster and demonstration titled "LLM-Powered Educational Platform for Smart Manufacturing Learning." In this project, he integrated a domain-specific large language model into a 3D printing system to create an intelligent tutoring assistant capable of interpreting real-time machine data and generating educational insights to enhance students' learning experiences in smart manufacturing.

In Pablo’s words: “I would especially like to thank Dr. Luis Segura, with whom we conceptualized the idea and developed the overall architecture of the platform, and Dr. Faisal Aqlan for encouraging me to participate in the competition and for his guidance throughout the process. I would also like to sincerely thank the UofL - Industrial & Systems Engineering Department for their continued support and encouragement, which have been instrumental in making opportunities such as this possible.”

We are so proud of Pablo's achievement, and appreciate the mentorship of both Dr. Segura and Dr. Aqlan.

Congratulations to Khalid Bello (PhD student) and Dr. Faisal Aqlan (advisor) on receiving the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗘 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗣𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱.

Their paper is titled: "Exploring Team Dynamics and Cognitive Workload in Mixed Reality Collaborative Learning Environments."

Co-authored with: Dr. Israa Azzam (Milwaukee School of Engineering) and Dr. Farid El-Breidi (Purdue University)

The research investigated how engineering teams collaborate in mixed reality environments by integrating physiological sensing, teamwork assessments, and usability measures. This work advances the understanding of team-based learning in immersive environments and contributes to the development of adaptive mixed reality systems that support collaboration, learning, and workforce development.

The ISE Department is seeking 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆-𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 for our 𝗦𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲 (𝗙𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲–𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳). This two-semester format enables teams to deliver 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿, 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹-𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗡𝗦𝗙 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 (𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦) 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱!

After two days of orientation activities at the University of Louisville, our 2026 cohort is now on its way to Hamburg, Germany, where they will spend six weeks conducting research on Digital Twin Technologies in Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

During the orientation, students met with faculty mentors Dr. Monica Gentili (PI), Dr. Faisal Aqlan, and Dr. Lihui Bai, and discussed research expectations, learned about intellectual property and research publications, and visited several research facilities at UofL, including the Louisville Automation & Robotics Research Institute (LARRI) and the Additive Manufacturing Institute of Science & Technology (AMIST). They also had the opportunity to experience a piece of Louisville's culture through a visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum.

In Hamburg, the students will work closely with Prof. Stefan Voß, Dr. Kai Brüssau, and Dr. Robert Stahlbock, at the Institute of Information Systems (IWI), University of Hamburg, on research projects focused on Digital Twin applications in logistics and supply chain systems.

This paper titled, “Exploring Team Dynamics in Virtual Reality Environments” provides data-driven insights into how we collaborate in immersive digital spaces. By integrating traditional performance metrics with sensor-based analysis, their work offers a roadmap for designing intuitive VR workspaces and effective remote training programs. This is a significant contribution to the future of work, and we are proud to celebrate their well-deserved recognition.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳. Lihui Bai 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗜𝗜𝗦𝗘 𝗟𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 (𝗟𝗦𝗖) 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘂𝘁𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱

Dr. Bai's selection for this prestigious award from the LSC Division followed a competitive and thorough evaluation process. Her nomination letter focused on the following key contributions, with several students writing letters to support her nomination:
- Experiential learning (online games, case studies)
- Leadership at UofL (co-director of LoDI)
- Curriculum development (new on-campus and online logistics and supply chain courses)
- Contributions to LSC Division and IISE (case competition)
- President of Louisville’s IISE Professional Chapter

Her prior recognitions at UofL include Provost's Award for an Exemplary Director of Graduate Studies, Student Champion Award, and Faculty Favorite award.

We are proud of Dr. Bai's accomplishments as an educator and champion of the logistics/supply chain domain.
