The University of Louisville School of Medicine, founded in 1837, is one of the oldest medical schools in the United States. Researchers at UofL are using stem cells to regrow damaged heart muscle, investigating new cancer treatments, and improving therapies for spinal cord injuries, among many areas of clinical and basic research. In addition to teaching and research, faculty members see patients

at facilities throughout the city, including the Ambulatory Care Building, the UofL Physicians Outpatient Center, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center, University of Louisville Hospital, the primary adult teaching hospital for the School of Medicine, and Norton Children’s Hospital, the pediatric teaching hospital for the school. Under the leadership of executive vice president of health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, Jeffrey Bumpous, M.D., F.A.C.S., continues to educate some of the nation's finest medical practitioners. In fact, it has graduated more doctors than any other institution in the Commonwealth.

Today, we join the academic medicine community in celebrating 150 years of the AAMC! 🎉

For a century and a half, the AAMC has helped advance medical education, research, patient care and advocacy by shaping healthier communities and brighter futures. We're proud to be part of that legacy as we educate tomorrow’s physicians, drive discovery and serve communities across Kentucky and beyond.

Here's to 150 years of impact.

Pride and purpose.

These two words define the work we do every day to educate future physicians, advance discovery and improve health for our communities.

As we kick off the month of June, we’re excited to share stories featured in our new School of Medicine viewbook; stories that reflect the people and programs driving innovation in patient care, expanding access to healthcare and leaving a lasting impact across the commonwealth and around the world.

Join us throughout June as we highlight the stories of our people and programs shaping the future of medicine.

This is where healing begins.

In the fast-paced, high-stakes world of medicine, caring for others is the job. But for many physicians, that calling can come at a cost.

Dr. Martin Huecker is helping lead a cultural shift in medicine, encouraging physicians to build sustainable habits centered around movement, rest, nutrition, wisdom and community.

As part of our Whole Person Wellness focus this May, we’re proud to spotlight the importance of caring for our caregivers and creating a healthier future for both physicians and patients.

What if future physicians learned how to treat chronic disease not only with prescriptions, but with practical nutrition education patients can actually use at home?

The newly developed University of Louisville Trager Institute Culinary Medicine Kitchen is teaching medical students and physicians in a hands-on learning environment focused on connecting evidence-based nutrition with real-life patient care.

Helen E. Collins, assistant professor of medicine, is helping shift what we understand about women’s health.

She was recently named the 2026 recipient of the Arthur C. Guyton Award for Excellence in Integrative Physiology. Dr. Collins’ research explores how the heart adapts within a complex, interconnected system — linking metabolism, organ communication and long-term health outcomes.

Her work is helping move care upstream toward earlier detection, more personalized interventions and a deeper understanding of how health evolves across a woman’s lifespan.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Collins on this national recognition and the meaningful impact of her work.

Today (and everyday!), we honor all who nurture, guide and care with a mother’s love. We celebrate mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, mentors, caregivers and the many people who show up as mother figures in our lives. We also hold space for those who long to be mothers, those carrying the weight of infertility or pregnancy loss, and anyone for whom this day brings mixed emotions.

From all of us at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, we see you, we appreciate you and we wish you comfort, joy and peace this Mother’s Day.

Behind every white coat is a person who also needs time to reflect, recharge and stay grounded.

For University of Louisville School of Medicine student Alan Harris, creativity became an important part of whole person wellness. What began as a classroom poetry assignment grew into a nationally recognized publication, and a reminder that caring for others often begins with caring for yourself.

“Making space for your creative passions isn’t a distraction from the work… it’s part of what allows you to truly thrive in it.”

Big hats. Bright colors. Long days in the sun.

As you head to Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby, remember: your Derby look can do more than make a statement. It can help protect your health.

From sunscreen to shade to wide-brim hats, small choices can make a big difference in preventing sun damage and supporting your overall well-being.

This Derby season, bet on yourself. Prioritize sun safety and make whole-person wellness part of your tradition.
