In this episode, we explore the powerful pull many parents feel toward helping others after their own NICU or loss journey, and the meaningful — yet sometimes complicated — relationship between trauma, purpose, and service.

Together, we discuss how lived experience can evolve into leadership, the importance of boundaries and sustainability in peer support, and the many ways families create connection and community after the NICU.

What do you do during mental health awareness month?
You build awareness and provide Mental Health First Aid trainings. Kent School had the opportunity to provide a training at the KY AHEAD, Kentucky Association on Higher Education and Disability, conference held at General Butler State Park, May 21.

We were honored to recognize our 2026 golden alum, Art Blackburn, at the University of Louisville Golden Alumni Awards held May 7. Art has continued to work in the professional field and has worked to support veterans over the years. Your journey started as a nontraditional student and what you once thought was impossible brought you to this moment. You said it best, “social work is about showing up with humility, with compassion and with a willingness to meet people exactly where they are. Social work has a way of changing you.”
