On Thursday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m. you are invited to a Grand Finale concert in Comstock Hall at the School of Music featuring the student participants of the UofL Summer Wind Band Institute. The annual event, produced by the University of Louisville Bands, provides five days of ensemble instruction and performance masterclasses for talented high school and middle school musicians. Two outstanding middle school Honor Bands and a select high school Wind Symphony will perform. Guest conductors Phil Thomas and Jason Freeman will conduct the middle school musicians, and the high school Wind Symphony will be led by Frederick Speck. The concert is free, and the public is invited.

Join us for a performance by Chamber Winds Louisville and the Louisville Concert Band. One of their favorite concerts of the year is the performance in conjunction with the Annual University of Louisville Wind Band Institute!

Our repertoire will include the full ensemble works, Twelve Seconds to the Moon by Robert W. Smith, The Transit of Venus by John Philip Sousa, Star Dust by Hoagy Carmichael, along with the chamber works Flutings for Paula by Leon Kirchner, and Octet by Carl Reinecke.

The musicians of Chamber Winds Louisville and the Louisville Concert Band share their enthusiasm for the performance of wind music in all of its dimensions. The repertoire is diverse, with many concerts including both
chamber ensembles and the full concert band. The integration of chamber music with full symphonic works brings great variety to performances, keeping the listeners engaged throughout. The director, Frederick Speck, is surrounded by colleagues who are educators (both in music and other disciplines), professional performers, and other fine musicians whose professions are in non-music fields. All are drawn together because of their appreciation for the fellowship of performance and the joy of sharing it with appreciative audiences. In addition to regular season concerts, the ensemble has performed at Kentucky Music Educators Association Conferences in 2012, 2017 and 2023, as well as the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in 2013 and 2023.

Meet Jiwon Lee, a music student pursuing a Master’s in Piano Performance. This summer, Jiwon will be traveling to Wilmington, NC, to participate in the 2026 Vivace International Music Festival, which is a wonderful opportunity to perform and learn from world-class faculty. Jiwon’s advice for music students is that “finding a mentor who truly resonates with you is essential. Right guidance ensures that your hard work is moving you in the right direction, which is just as important as the practice itself.”

It’s time to meet some of our current students! Follow along this summer for introductions and interesting stories.
Connor Bassett (BM Music Performance in trumpet 🎺 and BM Music Education ‘27) has several plans for this summer while away from campus. He will be working with the University of Louisville Summer Wind Band Institute in June and staffing for Ballard High School’s band camp in July.
He says of his upcoming work, “I love watching students grow as musicians and people, and watching their progress. Staffing at Ballard last summer was one of the most rewarding experiences, and I’m excited to go for it again!” ✨
His favorite memory with the School of Music is when the UofL Symphony Orchestra and Jazz department traveled to New Orleans this past January, and he can’t wait to return for another trip.
Connor states that he chose his area of study “because music has been the one thing I’ve always been consistently interested in… I also love helping people, and I love playing my trumpet, so I really want to teach students how to improve their skills on the trumpet, and that’s why I want to be a collegiate trumpet professor someday.”
We’re excited to see where Connor’s future leads!

What does success look like at UofL? weigh in and reflect on their years as Cardinals.

Louisville native and University of Louisville School of Music graduate Tristan Nava Mercado said, “Success, to me, is living a meaningful life that is aligned with who I am. It’s not only about achievements, it’s also about how I spend my day-to-day life. UofL has helped me become more confident in my playing skills, it’s helped me develop professionalism and it’s really helped me in the audition process for graduate school.”

Nava Mercado graduated magna cm laude with a bachelor of music and will continue pursuing his passion for cello at the Eastman School of Music. Tune in to hear where our Cardinals are heading next and what memories they’re keeping from Louisville.

Our music therapy faculty member, Chris Millett, MM, MT-BC, was recently awarded a Fulbright research award for his proposed project “Stemmer som teller (Voices that matter)”. Chris will join a Norwegian research team investigating how participatory and co-created community music therapy experiences can promote belonging and educational outcomes for high schoolers in Norway.
“Norway is one of the epicenters of Community Music Therapy, the philosophical orientation that grounds my teaching and therapy practice. I’m so grateful to share this experience with my family and students as we adapt to learning abroad. Additionally, I am looking forward to all the ways our program at UofL will continue partnering with the Grieg Academy Music Therapy Research Centre at the University of Bergen!”
Congratulations, Chris, and Go Cards!
