šŸ”©āœØ Celebrating the Order of the Engineer at UMass Lowell āœØšŸ”©

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is proud to recognize our students and graduates who participate in The Order of the Engineer—an association for graduate and professional engineers in the United States that emphasizes pride and responsibility in the engineering profession.

Inspired by Canada’s Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer (dating back to 1925), the first American ceremony was held on June 4, 1970 at Cleveland State University’s Fenn College of Engineering. Today, the Order has grown to include 245 active ā€œlinksā€ (chapters) across the country, with universities in nearly every state hosting ceremonies. Professional organizations such as NSPE, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and ASCE also host links—uniting engineers across disciplines and industries.

During the ceremony, participants take an oath and receive a stainless steel ring worn on the working hand—a symbol of their commitment to ethical practice, integrity, and service to society.

We’re proud to share a few photos from last night’s ceremony, featuring our Mechanical Engineering students, our department’s student office assistant, and the Dean of the College. Congratulations to all who took the oath and joined the Order! šŸ’™āš™ļø

Hey MIE Volunteers! šŸ‘‹šŸ¾

Thanks so much for helping out at Open House this weekend — you’re awesome! šŸ’œ

Quick heads-up: there’ll be heaters outside for those in the Southwick Quad, plus the Dean’s Office got us hand warmers šŸ™ŒšŸ¾. There’s also gonna be a hot chocolate stand (because we all deserve it). ā˜•ā„ļø

The weather’s looking mostly sunny, with temps around 44° high / 31° low, so bundle up! There will also be a few extra jackets in case anyone needs one.

Let us know if you have any questions or need anything!

Remembering Engineering Professor Sammy G. ShinašŸ•Šļø With sadness we announce the passing of mechanical and industrial engineering Professor Emeritus Sammy G. Shina, a longtime member of the UMass Lowell faculty and contributor to the university community, on Saturday, Oct. 25.

Sammy began teaching evening courses at UMass Lowell in 1971 as a member of the adjunct faculty while he still worked in private industry. He transitioned to teaching full time once he’d earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Tufts University.

Over an extremely successful and productive career, Sammy wrote six books and more than 100 technical papers, according to his obituary. He consulted for numerous companies, and he touched the lives of countless students along the way — as a professor, adviser and benefactor. He created the Sammy Shina Endowed Scholarship Fund for students majoring in industrial engineering, among other contributions to the university.

In 2014, Sammy’s dedication to finding solutions for environmentally safe manufacturing was honored with the ā€œAcademic Champion of Toxics Use Reductionā€ award at a ceremony at the Massachusetts State House.

The award bestowed by the Toxics Use Reduction Institute at UMass Lowell and the state Department of Environmental Protection recognized his efforts to create a consortium of companies, including some competitors, dedicated to working in collaboration to pursue safer alternatives to materials used in circuit boards.

Though Sammy retired from UMass Lowell in 2023, after 52 years in the classroom, he continued to teach as an emeritus faculty member. He had three online courses this fall.

Last year, the Sammy Shina Conference Room was dedicated in Room 220 of Dandeneau Hall. A relative, Alan Gabby, funded a professorship at UMass Lowell in Sammy’s honor in recognition of all he has done over the years.

Sammy is survived by his wife of 57 years, their four children and their families, including nine grandchildren. Generations of River Hawks whose educations and careers were shaped by Professor Shina include many current UMass Lowell students and the entire UML community extends our condolences to the Shina family.
