Pop culture loves the thought of the apocalypse. Zombie apocalypse got you scared? Thinking a post-apocalyptic world may actually happen? Has someone given a day, month, and year for the apocalypse?
Today, we often use the word โapocalypseโ to describe the end of the worldโor some catastrophic doomsday scenario.
But here's something you might not know:
The word comes from the Greek apokalypsis, meaning โrevelationโ or โunveiling.
That's why the final book of the Christian New Testament is traditionally called The Apocalypseโor, more commonly, Revelation.
Religious words make their way into modern language all the time, and they usually are not used in religious ways. Think about how often we use words like: scapegoat, karma, heaven, icon, and more.
We use these words in conversations, headlines, movies, music, politics, and advertisingโoften without thinking about where they came from.

It's embedded in our language, literature, art, politics, music, movies, and everyday conversations.
Hereโs something to think about: Does our understanding of religion change when religious words come to mean something other than how they were originally meant?
