October is National Bat Appreciation Month!🦇
This October, we’re celebrating one of nature’s most fascinating and often misunderstood animals! Bats play important roles in ecosystems by controlling insect populations, pollinating plants, and dispersing seeds. From tiny insect-eating bats to fruit and nectar specialists, bats have incredible adaptations that help them thrive in different environments.
Slide 1 and 3: Little yellow-shouldered bat (Sturnira lilium). This medium-sized, fruit-eating bat is found throughout Central and South America
Slide 2: Antillean ghost-faced bat (Mormoops blainvillei), also known as Blainville’s ghost-faced bat. This small insect-eating bat is found throughout parts of the Greater Antilles in the Caribbean.

Field Chronicles - Fostering Stewardship with Exploration

During his seven-month internship at Schilling Cattle, graduate student Markus Fleischer gained hands-on experience in the management of a registered Angus and Limousin seedstock operation. His experience included herd health and reproduction, cattle marketing, feeding, pasture management, and evaluating ways to improve the operation’s efficiency and profitability. The internship provided valuable insight into the day-to-day responsibilities of ranch management in a real-world setting. We are glad to have Markus back on campus for his two semesters of master’s coursework before sending him back out to another ranch for his final internship!

🚨New Publication Alert! 🚨
Congratulations to Dr. Matthew Barnes, Dr. Kerry Griffis-Kyle, and graduate student Sadie Roth for the recent publication "Dester Amphibian Calling Effort Changes in Response to Monsoonal Precipitation at Constructed but not Natural Waters."
In this paper, we assessed whether red-spotted toads 🐸 differ in their breeding aggregations at tinajas and constructed waters during low rainfall summers by measuring male calling activity over four summers with varying rainfall ☀️/🌧️. Our work reveals that constructed water catchments in the Sonoran Desert are not used as expected (😍) by red-spotted toads during low rainfall summers 🥵 , suggesting a need to consider other water management actions to support desert amphibians. Especially as frequency and intensity of droughts increases due to climate change 🌎 🤒 ️
