Last month, Christiana joined a cohort of her peers at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing and traveled to Italy for an immersive international program facilitated by the Office of Global Health in collaboration with the Doctors in Italy Fellowship Program. Over the course of the experience, students explored the Italian health care system, observed clinical environments and engaged in meaningful discussions about global health challenges.

Beyond the hospital walls, students took part in cultural activitiesβ€”from historic tours and Italian cooking classes to navigating local customsβ€”deepening their understanding of how culture, history and environment shape health care delivery. This transformative experience helped students sharpen their critical thinking, improve their ability to work across cultures and adapt to new and complex settings. These skills will not only prepare them for future global opportunities but also equip them to better serve the increasingly diverse patient population across West Texas.

Last month, a cohort of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing students, accompanied by faculty members, participated in an enriching international program in Italy! This educational initiative, facilitated by the Office of Global Health, underscored the institution's commitment to preparing future health care professionals for the complexities of a globalized world.

The group was hosted by Doctors in Italy Fellowship Program, an organization dedicated to providing exceptional learning opportunities for students worldwide. The itinerary included immersive experiences where the students shadowed local providers. This firsthand exposure not only deepened their understanding of the Italian health care system but also acquainted them with the daily challenges encountered by health care professionals there.
Beyond the clinical aspects, the program also emphasized cultural immersion. Students participated in historical tours and a cooking class, providing them with a holistic view of Italian life and culture. Level three nursing student, Alexa Escoto, shares what this experience was like through her lens.
