Texas Tech, South Plains College and Lubbock ISD have partnered to launch P-TECH, an innovative higher education and industry partnership at Coronado High School that focuses on college and career pathways in technology.

The program offers students an opportunity to receive a high school diploma in addition to industry based certifications, Level 1 or 2 certificates, and/or an associate degree while engaging in work-based learning at every grade level – all at no cost to the students.

Applications for P-TECH at Coronado are now open for the 2027-2028 school year.

John Nelson has a dream job and works with a dream team, teaching classes in the Department of History as an associate professor. For Nelson, he sees the opportunities of his current position as one way to pay things forward, remembering those who took time and ultimately made a difference in his own life.

“It has always been a goal of mine to be a good teacher before anything else. I’d received recognition in the past for my writing and research, but never a teaching award, and that, to me, was the crown jewel I have been working toward. For me, teaching is about helping students mature and develop as a whole person."
