Today we are highlighting Lubbock’s own Glenna Goodacre!

Born on August 28, 1939, Goodacre quickly became a prominent painter and sculptor who went on to win prestigious commissions to design the Sacagawea dollar coin and sculpt the Vietnam Women’s Memorial. Always maintaining strong ties with Texas Tech University, Goodacre became integral to the aestetic of student life.

“I am a sculptor of people. People of all ages, all races. Portraits of people - groups of people. I enjoy People. I love my work....and feel incredibly fortunate in making a living doing what I love.” - Glenna Goodacre

As the fall semester approaches, we are feeling inspired by Owen Morrel’s ‘Cube-i.’

Morrel was inspired by a drawing of a cube by Leonardo DaVinci. The cube, a symbol of wholeness or oneness, was, for DaVinci, a geometric representation of the interconnectedness of all things in the universe. Cube-i’s interactive nature triggers the spirit of exploration in the mind of the viewer—mirrors reflect those who view the sculpture and the surrounding environment, making navigating through the site a fanciful and unique experience.

Find ‘Cube-i’ at the Archer College of Health and Human Sciences at Angelo State University.

Happy World Photography Day!

Featured here is Joel Salcido’s ‘El Aprendizaje’ from his series ‘Spain: Millennium Past.’

Photojournalist Joel Salcido grew up in Mexico and the United States. In 1999-2000, the Salcido family, seeking to understand its roots, moved to Belorado, a small village in northern Spain. Photos produced during the artist’s yearlong sabbatical there culminated in ‘Spain: Millennium Past.’ In this series, the artist suspends time and its ceaseless evolution to invite viewers to experience images of a rich culture that pauses to savor life’s simple joys. By printing his photos in warm tones of earth, Salcido seeks to capture fragments of time where “visual poetry and beauty reside.”

Located in the TTU Administration Building.

The Texas Tech University System Public Art Collection is honored to announce the most recent acquisition, ‘Odyssey’ (1996), by the late artist and TTU Professor Emeritus Kenneth Ray Dixon.

Generously donated by the estate of Ken Dixon, ‘Odyssey,’ from his series “Order and Disorder,” is now permanently on view at the TTU School of Art. Texas Tech School of Art

Constructed from acrylic and mixed media on wood engraving, this modular artwork invites viewers to slow down and study the partial images pieced together. Inspired by an array of subjects from quantum physics to ornithology, and drawing on art historical references and styles, Ken Dixon’s interlocking puzzle pieces bring disparate images and ideas together into a single cohesive arrangement.
