Three years in the University of Lynchburg Doctor of Physical Therapy program gave Sabrina Vargas ʼ26 DPT plenty to remember, from late-night study sessions filled with laughter to three intramural kickball championships and service experiences that took her far beyond campus.

She found faculty who were approachable and supportive, classmates who became close friends, and countless ways to get involved.

Sabrina served as:
Co-President of GoServe
Interdisciplinary Chair for the Class of 2026
Relations Chair for the Community Health Clinic
She also participated in Special Olympics and Prosthetics and Orthotics initiatives.

Her Lynchburg DPT experience also took her around the world. In Belize, Sabrina worked with GoServe to provide physical therapy services to underserved communities, with a focus on pediatrics. She also traveled to Scotland and England through the program, gaining a broader perspective on healthcare and learning outside the classroom.

Now, Sabrina hopes to continue serving others on an even larger scale, with plans to pursue a career as a physical therapist either on active duty in the military or with the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps.

Critical care asks clinicians to make complex decisions when the stakes are highest. That is the experience Dr. Dakoda Farrington ʼ25 DMSc , brings to Lynchburg’s Doctor of Medical Science program.

A Lynchburg DMSc graduate and experienced trauma surgery PA, Dr. Farrington brings expertise in critical care, trauma surgery, and emergency general surgery directly into the classroom.

He teaches much of Lynchburg’s critical care curriculum. Through his courses, working PAs build advanced knowledge for managing complex, high-acuity patients and making informed decisions under pressure.

His experience as both a clinician and educator strengthens Lynchburg’s doctoral-level critical care curriculum and prepares PAs to expand their expertise in one of healthcare’s most demanding environments.

"My time at the University of Lynchburg was an incredibly meaningful experience. Although it felt like it passed by too quickly, the impact it had on me will last a lifetime. During my time there, I not only grew academically and personally, but I also formed friendships that I know will stay with me forever. The sense of community, support, and connection I found made my experience truly special, and I’m grateful for every moment I had there." - Vuronika Barnes ʼ24, ʼ26 MA

The track brought Vuronika to Lynchburg, but the people and possibilities are what made the experience last.

As a student-athlete, Vuronika found some of her closest friendships through the track and field program. In the classroom, she found the same sense of connection through small classes and professors who knew their students, understood their challenges, and genuinely wanted to see them succeed.

That support helped Vuronika grow into a confident leader while earning her Master of Arts in Nonprofit Leadership Studies. She pursued the degree with two big goals in mind: preparing for a future career with the FBI and gaining the knowledge to one day lead a nonprofit of her own. Through the program, she strengthened the leadership skills she knows will matter wherever her career takes her.

Jordan Nilsen ʼ22, ʼ26 MEd brings a little bit of Lynchburg into her third-grade classroom every year.

During College and Career Day, her students take a virtual tour of campus, learn where she lived and studied, and hear stories from her time on the women’s lacrosse team. She even brings in Lynchburg lacrosse gear so they can show their Hornet pride. It’s a tradition that connects the place Jordan once called home with the students she now inspires every day.

Jordan arrived at Lynchburg in 2018 to study elementary education and play lacrosse. After earning her undergraduate degree, she stayed for another season and started her MEd in Special Education. She later continued the program online while teaching third-grade math and science in Maryland, carrying lessons from Lynchburg directly into her own classroom.

Her passion for special education has guided her research, too. For her capstone, Jordan explored inclusive classrooms and practical ways teachers can use accommodations and modifications to help more students thrive.

Now she plans to return to Virginia and continue teaching at the elementary level.

"My time at the University of Lynchburg was such an amazing experience! From the beautiful campus to the incredibly supportive professors, it quickly felt like home. Being part of the lacrosse team made it even more special and also having the opportunity to continue into graduate school with many of the same professors, which made the experience even more meaningful. I made so many great memories and friendships, and I’m so grateful for everything Lynchburg gave me!"
