Dr. Robert Bullard, hailed as "The Father of Environmental Justice," has dedicated decades to advocating for frontline communities combating pollution and environmental injustice.

In 1979, Bullard's wife, Linda McKeever Bullard, represented Houston residents in the historic case Bean v. Southwestern Waste Management, challenging a landfill's placement in a predominantly black neighborhood. Bullard, an expert witness, conducted a groundbreaking study revealing a pattern of locating toxic waste sites in African American communities. This marked the beginning of his ongoing campaign against environmental racism, highlighting the unjust decision-making that disproportionately impacted people of color.

"Without a doubt", Bullard has said of his experience, "it was a form of apartheid where whites were making decisions and black people and brown people and people of color, including Native Americans on reservations, had no seat at the table."

Bullard's influential work includes 18 award-winning books addressing environmental issues, and he co-founded the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Climate Change Consortium. He is a leading campaigner against environmental racism, and the foremost scholar of the issue.

When we think of community service, we think of leaders like Dr. Robert Bullard - passionate leaders who advocate and uplift communities. As we celebrate and observe Black History Month, we will continue to lift up stories of Black changemakers, sharing their pathways to community building and service leadership.

Barbara Rose Johns Powell (1935 - 1991) was a leader in the American civil rights movement. At age 16, Barbara led a student strike for equal education at R. R. Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia. The resulting case (the only student-initiated case consolidated into Brown v. Board of Education) lead to "separate but equal" public schools being declared unconstitutional in 1954.

Barbara would go on to study library science at Drexel University and become a librarian in the Philadelphia school system. Like many other young civil rights leaders, including Claudette Colvin, Barbara's contributions to to making change were overlooked for many years. Today, Barbara Johns is now studied in Virginia elementary school history curriculum and has been recognized more broadly in the state.

As we celebrate and observe Black History Month, we will continue to lift up stories of Black changemakers, sharing a path of community building and service leadership.
