[post 2 of 2] Here is the final batch of pictures from last month’s Governor's Institutes of VT Weather & Climate Science Institute!

Day 4: This was our big field trip day to Burlington! GIV students got to see the operations area at US National Weather Service Burlington VT, tour the KCXX WSR-88D radar, and watch a live broadcast at WCAX-TV. We had lunch at Oakledge Park before heading back to the Vermont State University Lyndon Campus for a Twisters Movie night!

Day 5: For instrumentation day, GIV students got to launch both a radiosonde and windsond weather balloon. They also learned about severe weather and tornado field campaigns from Bobby Saba - PhD student at The University of Oklahoma. Finally, students examined supercell radar signatures in GR2Analyst and saw a tornado chamber demonstration.

Day 6: GIV students learned about subseasonal forecasting before applying what they learned throughout the entire week to a forecast simulation. We capped off the day with a fun kickball game, outdoor activities on President’s Hill, and one last bonfire.

Day 7: We had one last team building activity before our closing ceremony. For the poster symposium, GIV students presented posters to friends and family, showcasing what they learned at our week-long institute. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this amazing summer experience!

[post 1 of 2] We are excited to share pictures from last month’s Governor's Institutes of VT Weather & Climate Science Institute for VT high school students!

Day 1: Move-in day! GIV students played lawn and icebreaker games, toured the Vermont State University Lyndon Campus, and attended a “Meet your RAs” bonfire.

Day 2: GIV students had a great time meeting Mark Breen during our tour of the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium. After lunch, students learned about weather systems, contoured maps, and enjoyed a fun Kahoot review. Finally, Principal Investigator of the Antarctic Meteorological Research Center (AMRC-AWS), Dr. Matthew Lazzara, spoke to us about their weather station program in the Antarctic.

Day 3: GIV students learned about climate change and its impacts on local farms like Chandler Pond Farm- The Dill Family. Students also learned about carbon accounting at airports and heard from RTI International Research Scientist, Dr. Janel Hanrahan, about her work developing the NOAA Atlas 15 precipitation database.

This is a such a great opportunity for our students to practice real-time mesoscale forecasting and observe structure of severe storms in the Great Plains! ⛈️🌪

The Lyndon crew had a very exciting end to their trip! They returned safely back to Oswego earlier this week and are now wrapping up their research projects. Here are some pictures from their last few chase days. Thanks OswegoChasers for an incredible 10 days of chasing! 🚐🌪️⚡️

The last few days in the Northern Plains (mostly South Dakota) have been incredible - amazing storm structure and rotation, multiple funnels, a possible tornado, beautiful scenery, daily weather balloon launches, KH waves, rainbows, mammatus, and a DOW radar truck sighting! 🚐🌪️🌈 Vermont State University

The Lyndon crew is having a blast on their storm chasing trip so far! They saw a funnel cloud on their first day near the CO/NM border. Since then, they have seen numerous supercells, wall clouds, shelf clouds, gorgeous mammatus, golf ball size hail (after it fell), and incredible lightning activity! More pictures will be posted soon! 🌪️⛈️🧊⚡️
