Registration is now open for the 2026 Washington County Extension Association Annual Meeting!

The free public event includes the annual meeting of the Washington County Extension Association where the Norman W. Duzen Community Service Award and the University of Maine Volunteer Pen Award will be presented to outstanding volunteers. The event will include light refreshments and showcase programs and services offered by UMaine Extension. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore Extension’s collection of Virtual Field Trips (VFTs). Participants can step inside a goat barn, ride along in a tractor, and experience aquaculture through virtual reality headsets. These immersive educational experiences are designed to engage learners of all ages.

Not all fiddleheads are edible, so knowing how to identify them is key before you head out to harvest.
This quick video shows how to spot ostrich fern fiddleheads, including:
✔️ Smooth stems
✔️ A deep “U”-shaped groove
✔️ Brown, papery covering
These features help distinguish edible fiddleheads from lookalikes that may be unsafe.

Have artwork inspired by Maine’s farms, forests, or working waterfronts? The Maine Agricultural Mediation Program (MAMP) at University of Maine Cooperative Extension is now accepting submissions for the 2027 wall calendar and notecards!

🖌️ Theme: Farming and tending to the land and sea throughout the seasons
📅 Deadline: May 20, 2026
🎨 Open to all mediums (except photography)
📩 Submit up to 2 pieces

Selected artists will receive free copies of the calendar and notecards, and all proceeds support MAMP’s work helping Maine farmers navigate challenges and build sustainable solutions.
