The University of Southern California’s Department of Political Science and International Relations (POIR) is hosting the sixth annual USC POIR Predoctoral Summer Institute for First-Generation Scholars on July 8th-10th. The USC POIR predoctoral summer institute is an opportunity for undergraduate/MA students (1) to learn more about political science and social science PhD programs; (2) to learn what getting a PhD in political science is like; and (3) for institute participants to receive direct feedback and advice on how to craft a successful and competitive application for admission to a PhD program in social science, political science, and/or international relations.

This institute is specifically targeted towards first generation students undergraduate and MA students interested in pursuing a PhD in political science or allied social science fields (e.g., sociology or economics).

Specifically, the institute’s program includes the following:

An introduction to PhD programs in political science, including an overview and demystification of graduate school and details regarding funding/fellowships for PhD students.

Direct feedback and advice on how to craft a successful and competitive application for admission to a PhD program in political science or similar social science fields. Examples of application materials from students who have recently been accepted into the top PhD programs in political science will be provided to participants in order to assist participants with their own future PhD applications to USC or elsewhere.

USC faculty in the political science and international relations (POIR) PhD program will work directly with institute participants to discuss application materials, including research statements, CVs/resumes, and writing samples. Participants are not required to have these materials drafted prior to the institute.

A chance to meet faculty and PhD students at USC to discuss their research interests and provide an overview of the discipline as it relates to institute participants’ own interests

Participants in this institute will learn about opportunities to have their PhD graduate school application fees waived if they apply to the USC POIR PhD program.

We're saddened to share the news that our retired colleague, Dr. Daniel Guerrant, passed away a few days ago. He was a longtime fixture of the political science program at both Middle Georgia College and Middle Georgia State in Cochran and was beloved and respected by his students and colleagues, and will be deeply missed by us all.

Dr. Daniel Guerin Guerrant of Cochran, Georgia, passed away on April 8, 2026, at the age of 68. Born in Roanoke, Virginia, Daniel was the son of the late Robert S. and Helen O. Guerrant. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Somerset Sonny O. Guerrant. He is

The chancellor of the University System of Georgia, Dr. Sonny Perdue, joined our POLS 1101 American government dual enrollment class taught by William Carroll at The Westfield School this morning in Perry. He talked with students and answered questions about his distinguished career in public service from the Houston County Planning and Zoning Commission, through the state legislature, governorship, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, and the USG.
