Dr. Manish N. Shah, professor and chair, has been recognized by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) for career achievement and national impact in emergency medicine research.

Dr. Shah received SAEM’s Excellence in Research Award for his sustained, field-shaping contributions to improving the quality, safety, and outcomes of emergency care for older adults, particularly people living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.

His work includes major National Institute on Aging-funded programs and clinical trials aimed at translating research into everyday emergency care.

Dr. Shah’s impact extends well beyond his own scholarship. He has trained and mentored many junior investigators and previously led the NIH-funded KL2 Scholars Program at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Under his leadership, our department has also fostered a collaborative research culture focused on connecting emergency response with systems innovation and support for patients whose needs extend beyond the ED.

We’re grateful for Dr. Shah’s leadership and dedication to the .

We are beyond proud to celebrate our Medical Student Education Program Manager, Niki Hagen, who was named Clerkship Coordinator of the Year by the SAEM Clerkship Directors in Emergency Medicine.

For more than a decade, Niki has played a central role in advancing emergency medicine education for UW medical students, aligning operational, educational, and administrative work with UW School of Medicine and Public Health standards, accreditation requirements, and department goals.

Her impact shines brightest in her outstanding support for students, faculty, and colleagues, said Dr. Corlin Jewell, director of medical student education.

“Niki represents the heart of our team,” he said. “Her leadership, advocacy, and operational excellence make her truly deserving of this national recognition.”

This , the BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine is announcing new digital resources for EMS professionals across the state: updated EMS protocols and a new UW EMS website 🩺💻

These resources are designed to put expert, evidence-based guidance within easy reach while helping current and prospective EMS partners explore the UW’s approach to medical direction, education, training, quality improvement, and prehospital support.

Through the Division of Prehospital Medicine, EMS partners have access to physician medical directors, 24/7 field response, and experts in pediatric emergency medicine, technical rescue, tactical medicine, rural EMS, and other specialized areas of prehospital care 🚑🚨

This work reflects the EMS Week theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” and our commitment to helping EMS clinicians and agencies deliver remarkable care when it matters most.

Pediatric emergencies are high-stakes calls, especially in rural communities where EMS providers may be the first and only point of emergency care 🚑

On EMS for Children Day, we’re proud to join the Orion Initiative and Green Lake County EMS professionals in strengthening pediatric emergency preparedness across rural Wisconsin through Specialty Training at Rural Sites-Pediatric Prehospital Care (STARS-PPC).

Led with UW emergency medicine expertise, STARS-PPC brings realistic, hands-on pediatric simulation training directly to rural EMS teams, helping clinicians build confidence and sharpen skills before they face these critical situations in the field.

Thank you to our partners at the Orion Initiative, Berlin EMS, and Southern Green Lake County Ambulance for advancing this important work and helping ensure children receive high-quality emergency care when and where they need it most.

This is who's celebrating at the Dept of Emergency Medicine! 🚑🚨

A lot may have changed over the years, but our dedication to improving prehospital care has only grown.

The Division of Prehospital Medicine now includes eight physicians board-certified in both emergency medicine and EMS — and one of the few physicians in the U.S. with additional board certification in clinical informatics.

As medical directors, it's an honor to work with EMS professionals in Dane County and across Wisconsin to improve outcomes, together. Happy EMS Week!

Congratulations to the Emergency Department nursing team at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital on receiving the DAISY Team Award! 🌼

This annual recognition honors nurse-led teams who go above and beyond in patient care, bringing exceptional collaboration, compassion, and clinical skill to every shift.

The Madison VA Emergency Department is a true partnership in care. Our UW Department of Emergency Medicine physician faculty are grateful to work alongside this remarkable VA nursing team, whose steadiness and commitment to Veterans make a difference every day.

Thank you for your leadership, teamwork, and dedication to the patients we are privileged to serve. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

We'll put a bow on National Nurses Week by sharing our Emergency Department staff who received a Daisy Team Award from this nomination from a Veteran:

"On a Friday in February, at around 9:00 am I was brought into the emergency department at the Madison VA Hospital. My symptoms were a high fever that was going on day three and horrible GI symptoms. I was foggy, exhausted and ached all over.

For the next thirty hours I was handled by 19 angels. From the first person that greeted me in the emergency area to the nurses who took blood and injected me with various things, brought me a blanket, calmed me down, wheeled me around, got me into a bed, saw that I was comfortable, let me rest, kept me awake, answered questions that I don’t recall asking, adjusted the bed, gave me medicine, kept giving me water, explaining to my wife and myself what was happening, to explaining the DNR paperwork, to keep checking on me, I say THANK YOU.

If there was one thing that could have changed it would be to give me a list of who did what. To the nurse that was with me while I was “most with it”. I love you.

To the PA students that wheeled me to and from various scans and rays, thanks for letting me ramble.

To the head doctors and residents who came back multiple times to see that I knew what was going on and informing me that the DNR thing wasn’t imminent, just a procedure, THANK YOU.

I can’t begin to tell you how comforting it was to know and feel that everyone cared so much. When I mentioned that I was praying for each of you to have a great day, it gave me peace, and I loved the smile you gave me back. I know some of you were wondering if I was still foggy, I wasn’t. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciated your efforts.

The following Saturday I was planning on going on a water ski trip to Florida. Most of you freaked out when I said this. Then reality sank in and you helped me make that trip. You are all amazing angels and you all should have DAISYs. I wish I could recall each of your names. "

Join us in congratulating our latest DAISY Foundation Award winners! 🙌

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our second annual Alumni Grand Rounds 💙🩺

It was a meaningful day of learning and connection, strengthened by the alumni, faculty, residents, fellows, and staff who continue to make the DEM community so remarkable.

A special thank you to Chris Ford, MD, PG ’17, for an engaging Grand Rounds discussion on misinformation and disinformation, and the vital role physicians play in upholding the Hippocratic Oath in modern medicine.

To our alumni who could not make it this year: we missed you. We hope this is just the beginning of more opportunities to reconnect, return to Madison, and stay engaged with the department you helped shape.

We are grateful for this community and excited for what comes next. On, Wisconsin!
