What was it like to be a badger engineering student 50 years ago?

You wouldn’t have been the first woman. That was Emily Hahn, who graduated in 1926 with a degree in mining engineering.

You might have been one of the first to be part of the interdisciplinary Materials Science Program, though — it was established in 1970.

You also might have studied within the Mining and Metallurgical Engineering Department, which would later change its name to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in 1988.

And like the generations that came before you, you’d know:

Once a badger, always a badger! 👐

At 6 a.m., most college students are still asleep. Teagan Strecker is already planning her day on the manufacturing floor.

Teagan, a rising senior in materials science and engineering, is wrapping up her summer as an automation integration engineering intern with GE HealthCare's Operations Management Leadership Program. She's working at a plant that uses powder forging and refractory metals to manufacture X-ray components for medical imaging machines.

It's not the track she once thought she'd pursue, and that's exactly her advice to other students: "I always felt pressure to land roles that were purely research or purely design, but there are many places where your skills and experiences can be valuable."
