Finals week, chemistry style.
From balancing chemical equations to mastering reaction mechanisms, Badgers are putting in the work as the semester wraps up. Our organic chemistry students are showing what it means to stay focused, collaborate, and push through one last challenge before summer begins.
See how students across campus are buckling down — equations, study groups, and all:

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, 124 chemistry students are turning curiosity into discovery.
At this year’s Department of Chemistry Awards Ceremony, more than $415,000 in scholarships, grants, and research support helped open lab doors, fund hands‑on research, and give students the resources they need to push science forward. Donor support doesn’t just recognize achievement—it makes future breakthroughs possible.

Celebrating 100 Years of Colloid & Surface Science — with UW Chemistry at the Origin Story!

Did you know the very first National Colloid Symposium was held at the University of Wisconsin–Madison back in 1923? It all started when UW Chemistry chair Joseph Howard Mathews championed the idea of bringing researchers together to spark innovation. That spark turned into a century‑long tradition that shaped an entire field.

From hosting Theodor Svedberg—whose time at UW helped lead to a Nobel Prize—to launching research that influenced industry and scientific tools worldwide, UW Chemistry played a foundational role in building the colloid and surface science community we know today.

A century later, the symposium is still going strong, still shaping science, and still carrying forward the collaborative spirit that began in Madison.

Proud of UW Chemistry’s legacy. Inspired by what’s next.

Big news from UW–Madison Chemistry!

Congratulations to Professor Randall Goldsmith, who has been named a 2026 Guggenheim Fellow — one of only 223 scholars, scientists, and artists selected from nearly 5,000 applicants. This honor recognizes his exceptional creativity and groundbreaking work in single‑molecule spectroscopy and photonic materials.

Goldsmith’s research pushes the boundaries of how we “listen” to individual molecules, revealing hidden behaviors in catalysts, biomolecules, and polymers. His innovative approaches are opening new possibilities in chemical instrumentation and even next‑generation protein sequencing.

This fellowship adds to a remarkable year for Goldsmith, who also received the 2026 ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation.

A huge congratulations to Professor Goldsmith — and to the students and collaborators who help make this pioneering work possible.
