Hiroki Sone has won a Distinguished Service Award from the American Rock Mechanics Association (ARMA)! This honor recognizes Hiroki's participation in ARMA symposium committees and his dedication to organizing and delivering a key educational workshop.

Congratulations to Zihao Sheng, transportation engineering PhD student and recipient of the 2026-27 Grainger Wisconsin Distinguished Graduate Fellowship!

Zihao is collaborating with Sikai Chen to overcome challenges with autonomous driving. He's published 19 journal articles, given 14 peer-reviewed conference presentations, has five manuscripts under review, and has accrued over 900 citations. As a grader and teaching assistant, he's also guided over 155 undergrads, earning a reputation as a patient and supportive mentor.

In honor of National Mosquito Control Awareness Week, NASA is showcasing Professor Paul Block's dengue project! This project combines several tools to improve forecasts of the dengue risk in Puerto Rico. 🦟

Dengue, which is spread by mosquitoes, is a serious health threat in Puerto Rico and a growing concern in parts of the U.S. 🦟

The UW-Madison Concrete Canoe team will appear at the ASCE Fairmont State University National Competition next week, June 25-27. Their 2026 boat, Vitraux, is a 19-feet-long, 230-pound canoe, made entirely out of concrete. It came in first place in presentation, prototype, and overall competition at the Western Great Lakes Regional Symposium, marking the third consecutive regional win for UW-Madison!

The Steel Bridge team at UW-Madison placed 30th in the nation this year and is aiming for the national title in 2027!

May 23rd marked their first appearance at nationals in seven years. The team competed with a 23-foot-long bridge made of prefabricated members assembled in timed construction, and put it to the test under a load of 2500 lbs.

Ziyan Wu graduated this spring, but the impact of her mentorship on campus will endure for years to come.
