Congratulations to Campbell Haasch and Jiayi Tang for receiving this year’s Standard Imaging Travel Award! Now in its 17th year, this award supports medical physics graduate students attending AAPM, and includes a 3D-printed model of a Standard Imaging, Inc. phantom.

A unique part of our ASSURE program is connecting with industry partners. On July 20th, trainees were hosted by in Waukesha to gain firsthand exposure to CT, ultrasound, and MRI technologies through facility tours, technical presentations, live demonstrations, and professional development discussions. Throughout the day, GE HealthCare engineers, scientists, and leaders generously shared their expertise and career experiences, demonstrating a remarkable commitment to educating and mentoring the next generation of radiological sciences innovators.

This visit highlights the strong and longstanding partnership between GE HealthCare and University of Wisconsin-Madison + UW Health, underscoring the shared dedication to advancing education, research, and workforce development in healthcare technology. Thank you to the many GE HealthCare professionals who made this memorable experience possible for our ASSURE students!

Bruce R. Thomadsen, PhD, will receive the 2026 William D. Coolidge Gold Medal tonight at the annual American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) conference in Vancouver in recognition of his eminent contributions in the field of medical physics.

Throughout his more than 50-year career, Thomadsen has kept a strong focus on the patient’s needs, and that focus has led to national recognition in radiation therapy physics, patient safety, and quality assurance.

Last week, students from the ASSURE program had the opportunity to visit innovative, industry-based radiation oncology facilities just outside Madison, Wisconsin.

Thank you to Standard Imaging, Inc. and Leo Cancer Care for welcoming our students and providing an incredible behind-the-scenes look at your facilities. Experiences like these help connect classroom learning with real-world practice, and we're grateful for your support of the next generation of medical physicists.

The ASSURE program is in full swing, with 17 undergraduate students from across the country entering their 5th week of medical physics research here at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Since arriving, the ASSURE cohort has had the chance to explore the field of medical physics through their individual research projects and a series of educational and professional development seminars and tours. Most recently, the ASSURE cohort toured the University of Wisconsin Medical Radiation Research Center (UWMRRC) and Radiation Calibration Laboratory (UWRCL). The ASSURE cohort has also had the opportunity to explore the beautiful summer in Madison through a recent campfire gathering at the Lakeshore Nature Preserve.

With an exciting first half of the summer already underway, the ASSURE team looks forward to supporting these talented students as they continue to learn, grow, and hone their skills in the field of medical physics.

With sadness, we share news of the passing of Charles “Chuck” Mistretta, PhD, a pioneering researcher who transformed the field of medical imaging. Dr. Mistretta’s work not only produced patents, publications, commercial technologies, and clinical tools, but more importantly, it changed the lives of patients and the careers of the many scientists, physicians, and students who had the privilege of working with him. He was 85 and an emeritus professor of medical physics, radiology and biomedical engineering.
