Happy 250th Anniversary of the Day the Continental Congress declared the American colonies independent from Great Britain. (On Saturday, we'll commemorate the signing of the Declaration of Independence.) John Adams wrote that today's "great anniversary Festival" should "be commemorated with solemn Acts of Devotion . . , Pomp and Parade, with Sh[o]ws, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other."
