The UW-Madison Dance Department is a leader and innovator in the field of dance. Emphasizing the development of the well-rounded dance artist living and working within a global and technological community. Contemporary dance is at the heart of the program, which is enhanced by the study of somatic practices and other dance forms such as ballet and cultural dance. Physical practice is deepened by r

igorous study of conceptual frameworks, history and critical theory. The spirit of creative investigation, originality, innovation, and productivity are main themes within a greater context of social awareness. Courses stress personal creativity, individual growth, and strong dance training. We offer BFA and BS degrees in Dance, certificates in Dance, Dance/Movement Therapy and Pilates.

On Saturday, April 18 Emily Tlachac will present her senior honors exhibition "The Unseen Process of Creating," a choreographic work that explores the interplay between digital animation and live dance performance, examining themes of collaboration and creative burnout within the artistic community.

This interdisciplinary exploration will have two showings at the Arts Lofts, one at 8:00pm and one at 8:30pm.

On Friday, April 17 at 3:30 pm, Evelyn Henriksen and Marissa Stolt will present their senior honors projects "Our Evolving Perceptions" and "Calculated Movement" in the Margaret H'Doubler Performance Space, Lathrop Hall.

"Our Evolving Perceptions" is a choreographic work by Evelyn Henriksen that examines how dance majors’ perceptions of their art form evolve over the course of their undergraduate experience.

"Calculated Movement " is Marissa Stolt's exploration of the integration of mathematic concepts in dance, translating abstract concepts into visually and physically accessible forms.

Abstract
In the months before U.S. involvement in WWII, UW Madison offered a remarkable crossroads for two students, Anna and Lawrence Halprin, whose careers would reshape the fields of Landscape Architecture and Dance. Drawn to UW as one of the few safe harbors for Jewish college students during the academic antisemitism of the 1930s, the Halprins found each other while reinforcing their cultural identity in the campus Hillel chapter, the second oldest in the nation. Ross explores how a distinctly UW-Madison imprint fueled the performance and urban design activism that became a signature of the Halprins’ work. The result would be a new civic body, socially responsive, aesthetically aggressive and anchored by an intimate understanding of social exclusion.
