Women's Studies is an academic field which looks directly at women seeking to understand their roles and impact in society as well as the impact of social institutions and processes on them. Multicultural and multidisciplinary, the field of Women's Studies looks at the findings of research on women, the processes used to achieve them, and the uses of research results. Ongoing interaction with the

world allows Women's Studies to test academic premises against the realities of women's lives and to encourage positive public policy and change. Sarah Harder

The call for proposals is now open for the Big Berks 2027 and closes on June 30, 2026!

Join us in Minneapolis (June 10–13, 2027) for “Beyond Boundaries: Gender, History and the Futures We Imagine.”

Our 2027 theme calls us to reaffirm the centrality of feminist, q***r, Black, Brown, and trans histories to our collective understanding of the past—and to the preservation and progress of democratic life. At a moment when histories of women, gender, and sexualities are under attack—in classrooms, archives, museums, parks, and public discourse—the Berks stands in defense of historical truth and the right to teach, research, and tell stories that reflect the complexity of human experience.

We invite submissions from historians, primary and secondary educators, archivists, curators, artists, independent scholars, community activists, and practitioners across disciplines and geographies, representing all career stages from emerging to established professionals.

Special tip if you’re staying at the conference hotels! (Hampton Inn & Doubletree on Johnson St.) Cut down on your trek to the Union w/ the free Route 80 bus! Go a couple blocks West to the intersection of Johnson & Lake to get Route 80 which will drop off right in front of the Union

Madison has two cab companies: Union Cab & Madison Taxi. Both can be booked via phone or online. Union Cab has ADA compliant taxis. Visit unioncab.com or madtaxi.com for more info.

Madison is a bike-friendly city; many streets have bike lanes; you can lock your bike outside of the Union. Where there is construction, a sidewalk will be open on at least one side of the street
