MKI Symposium: “German Influences on Wellness, Health, and Pharmaceuticals in America”
OCTOBER 29–30, 2026

In person at Memorial Library, Room 126, 728 State Street, Madison, WI, and livestreamed.

Pre-registration is required to receive a Zoom link.
German influences on wellness, health, and pharmaceuticals in America have a long history. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, immigrants brought traditional healing practices and new medical knowledge with them, while Americans traveled to German universities to study the latest scientific developments. For two days, this symposium will bring together scholars from Europe and the United States to explore these transatlantic transfers of knowledge in the areas of home remedies and pharmaceuticals, naturopathy and exercise, midwifery, and medical treatment. The symposium concludes with an exhibit of archival materials from the collections of the Max Kade Institute and the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Saturday, May 2, 2026

Join us for the 2026 annual meeting of the Friends of the Max Kade Institute, which will be held at Kegel’s Inn in West Allis, just west of Milwaukee. The business meeting will be followed by a luncheon, featuring German dishes, and a presentation on “Milwaukee Brewers in the Post-Prohibition Era.” by Timothy Holian, Lecturer in the Department of World Languages at UW–Whitewater.
Afterwards, we will take a two-part private tour of the Miller Brewery production site and archives. The latter contains fascinating materials spanning the company’s 170-year history since its founding by Frederick Miller (Friedrich Müller), an immigrant from Württemberg.
