New semester, new faces: The iSchool is pleased to welcome Dr. Rod Abhari as postdoctoral fellow as part of the Wiscosnin Exchange, a campus-wide initiative to advance civil dialogue in higher education.

An expert on information integrity and science communication, Abhari will work closely with Professor Jodi Schneider, seeking a deeper understanding of how civic disagreements with science can be incorporated into research.

With the Dane County non-emergency phone line implementing an AI-powered virtual assistant, our Assistant Professor Devansh Saxena — an expert in human-AI interaction — weighed in on what these changes may mean for local government employees.

"These systems are being proposed as addressing a long-standing issue in public systems, which is worker shortages and worker burnout," Saxena said. But, he added, "Oftentimes [AI] makes a lot of mistakes, and that verification and correction work is offloaded back onto the workers."

We are excited to welcome Lin Gokee as Northern Outreach Specialist for the Tribal Libraries, Archives & Museums (TLAM) program!

Gokee grew up in Red Cliff and has worked at the Ginanda Gikendaasomin (“We Seek to Learn”) Red Cliff Tribal Library, as Library Engagement Coordinator and eventually as Library Director.

In the new role, "I will be working with the Tribal Nations in the northern part of what we now call Wisconsin to share knowledge, connect with Tribal cultural institutions, and facilitate student involvement in service learning projects," they said. Gokee's position is funded by a Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Grant, exemplifying the iSchool's commitment to serving communities statewide and beyond.

We're excited for Indigenizing Information Institutions, a new webinar series designed for librarians and information professionals across all sectors who are committed to integrating Indigenous knowledge and protocols within their collections and services.

Kicking off Sept. 9 in collaboration with the Tribal, Libraries, Archives, and Museum (TLAM) program, the series covers topics including how Indigenous lenses can reshape teaching on privacy, algorithmic bias, information behavior, and access; an Indigneous subject-headings project at the Library of Congress; and more.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Jodi Schneider, whose research will receive funding as part of the Igniting Interdisciplinary Innovation (I³) initiative at UW–Madison!

Alongside colleagues from the Center for Healthy Minds and the Department of Medical History & Bioethics, Schneider will help tackle a big question: Can the ethical qualities of scientists themselves — such as curiosity, humility, altruism and objectivity — improve the integrity and innovation of scientific work?

Through their research, the team aims to create scalable models that can improve how science is conducted across institutions.

Is it possible to peer into the future of drug discovery?

Using machine learning and large-scale data from the biomedical literature, Assistant Professor Ian Hutchins and PhD student Salsabil Arabi developed an innovative method for early identification of promising drug research topics.

"This approach can efficiently flag research topics generating approved drugs several years prior to approval," Arabi and Hutchins write, allowing policymakers to "target financing ... in an effort to accelerate disease treatment."

Last week, a group of iSchool graduate students, faculty and staff traveled to Milwaukee for the 2026 Wisconsin Association of Academic Librarians conference at Marquette University.

MA Library & Information Studies students Genevieve Marvin, Risa Stiegler and Claire Zettl shared insights on mapping metadata, analyzing space use, and building community in academic libraries.

Several iSchool alumni also presented at the conference, including a keynote by Jenny McBurney MA'14, whose talk was entitled "Resisting Censorship through Public Engagement: How Librarians are Meeting the Moment."
