Phil Johnston's (BA’94) path from newsrooms to Hollywood has always been shaped by people.

His years in journalism taught him to look past the headlines and toward the human stories underneath, and he now uses that skill to shape the characters he brings to life on screen. From Wreck‑It Ralph to Zootopia, his storytelling is rooted in curiosity, empathy and connection.

This week's spotlight is Oliver Gerharz, a senior studying both Reporting and Strategic Communications, Political Science and a certificate in Folklore Studies. Oliver is working as a Student Engineer, Podcaster, and World View Board Operator at Wisconsin Public Radio, Media 22, and WORT 88.9 Community Radio! 📻🎙️

Over the summer, Oliver has gained experience in community radio, a smaller-scale operation that allows him to get more personal and active in his role at the station. His previous skills and training he received from WSUM has helped prepare him for his experiences this summer!

This week's spotlight is Katherine Meyers, a senior studying Journalism (Reporting) and Communication Arts. Katherine is working as a News Intern at WCCO-TV Minneapolis! 🗞️

At WCCO, Katherine is getting a first-hand look at every behind-the-scenes aspect of the newsroom. She works with reporters on packages and stand-ups, producers on organization and writing, digital teams on editing and social media, and photographers on visual storytelling. Her favorite part of her role has been getting to work side-by-side with reporters. ❤️

"Driving out, meeting a stranger, learning from them and turning it into a story all in one day has been so exciting."

This week's spotlight is Amina Haniieva, a junior studying Journalism (Reporting) and Political Science. Amina is working as a Future Focus Summer Intern at ABC7 Sarasota (WWSB) in Sarasota, Florida! 🌴📰

At ABC7, Amina gets hands-on experience covering breaking news, local government, public safety and community stories while learning how to think quickly and turn complex information into compelling stories. Her favorite part of her role is seeing a story go from an idea to something that airs on TV and reaches thousands of people in her community. ❤️

"The SJMC gave me the foundation, but this internship has shown me the importance of showing up every day willing to work hard, ask questions and take on new challenges, even when they’re way outside my comfort zone."
