UW-Madison Art Department Located at George L. Mosse Humanities Building and the Art Lofts, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Degree Offerings: B.S., B.F.A., M.A., & M.F.A.

The Art Department in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is committed to teaching art in the context of a major research university and a vibrant intellectual community. Its mission is based on the premise that art is the nexus of all the humanities and that creative expression in the visual arts has provided some of the most enduring contributions to society and culture. The art department strives to provide both a fertile and challenging environment for aesthetic and critical engagement, and the technical skills necessary for the practice of art in the changing landscape of the twenty-first century. It encourages innovation and cross-disciplinary activity, and believes that students should utilize the vast academic resources of the university to inform and deepen their artistic vision. The department has a distinguished history of providing exceptional education in the visual arts in a stimulating, nurturing and diverse community. Our final group of exhibiting Wisconsin Alumni Association features from the How We Got It Together exhibition all graduated this year, 2026. Thank you for joining us on this 3 week special celebration of 112 artists & creatives across 22 posts, showcasing artworks & posters that honor all forms of life work & life lived, be sure to see the work for yourself through the 18th!

Tonight, Oct 16, 5-9pm at Gallery 7 of the Humanities Bldg, join us for the Opening Reception of the exhibition, featuring the work of the 1986-1998 alumni!

Kayla Bauer explores nostalgia, identity, & place-based history as it relates to personal experiences within the city of San Francisco. Through artist books, zines, & exhibitions, she continues her photographic research & recently earned her PhD.

Interdisciplinary artist, writer, & instructor at Edgewood University, Tina Rose Rea Meister’s work centers on q***r archive & world-making through the lens of domestic & ecological spaces. Utilizing quilting & fiber arts, paintings, & experimental film, she explores how interior, psychological, & relational identities are externalized in both the curated spaces of the home along with the wider world.

Interdisciplinary artist Alex Mikev explores time & work by manipulating perceptual phenomena associated with these subjects, using drawing, video installation art, printmaking, & digital imaging processes to produce images associated with intense effort, exercises in futility, & experiences outside of work activity that generate experiences of awe, pleasure, & collective presence.

Anne E. Stoner is a sound artist & sonic researcher whose work criticizes political systems of disability, injury, pollution, & death, questioning the role of the human body as a member of a national & global infrastructure in the 21st century. Her work has been shown & published nationally & internationally.

Today is the final day of exhibiting Wisconsin Alumni Association from the How We Got It Together exhibition features, see the work for yourself through the 18th!

Also today, Oct 16, 12:30-2pm at the Art Lofts Gallery, attend the Conversation with the Artists panel with the 1999-2015 alumni. Then from 5-9pm at Gallery 7 of the Humanities Bldg, join us for the Opening Reception!

Professor at Miami University, Carlos Ortiz earned his MA & PhD from UW-Madison Department of Spanish and Portuguese in 2023. His research focuses on the intersections of 20th & 21st-century Latin American culture, hemispheric approaches to theatre & performance in the Americas, contemporary Chilean theatre & performance, & q***r studies.

Caitlin Mary Margarett Sørensdatter works at the crossroads of ecofeminist, apophatic thought, & folkloric apparitions that emerge from solastalgia, weaving performance into contemporary craft, augmented by autotheoretical literary processes in the form of epistles, benedictions, & speculative fiction. She graduated in 2024.

A freelance writing coach & developmental editor with more than 10 years experience across genres & disciplines, Zoe Cohen provides customized support for artists, academics, prospective graduate students, & creative writers. She earned her AbD from Interdisciplinary Theatre Studies in 2025.

Anamika is a researcher & artist pursuing her doctoral studies at Art & Archaeology Princeton U, investigating trans-oceanic histories & the role of institutions in the transition from colonial polity to national regimes within South Asia & the Caribbean. She earned her MFA in 2025.

Painter Mallory Stowe’s work reflects how systems of memory, whether in the body, the environment, or society, can perpetuate suffering or nurture empathy. The theatricality of the scenes suggests a parallel universe where the mundane holds a compellingly mysterious meaning. She graduated in 2025.

There are only a few more features of the exhibiting Wisconsin Alumni Association from the How We Got It Together exhibition left to go, be sure to see the work for yourself through the 18th!

Tomorrow, October 16, 12:30-2pm at the Art Lofts Gallery, attend the next Conversation with the Artists panel with the 1999-2015 alumni. Then from 5-9pm at Gallery 7 of the Humanities Building, join us for the opening reception featuring the work of the 1986-1998 alumni!

Interdisciplinary artist Elizabeth Sheeler’s work explores blindness, perception, accessibility, & the ways we experience the world beyond sight. Alongside her studio practice, she teaches art & creates interactive experiences that invite viewers to reconsider how knowledge, memory, & place are formed. She earned her MFA in 2022.

Artist & educator Teresa Audet makes artwork in wood & basketry. Rooted in the belief that making can be both meditative & transformative, she creates objects that invite curiosity, play, & deep attention. She is represented by Chaos Contemporary Craft & graduated in 2023.

Jewelry artist & sculptor Xinchen Li’s work tells a narrative of her surroundings & manifests her memories in pieces rife with portraits & symbolism. Following years of study in metalsmithing & jewelry design, she enlarged the format of her work from small-scale jewelry to wearables & installation sculptures. She earned her MFA in 2023.

Indian artist is the founder of Prayogillu_Vellulla, a site-specific interdisciplinary community space that fosters experimentation in rural-global connection, & the S.N. Foundation, a part-time volunteer-based yoga group. His social art projects invite participants to actively engage with each other across cultures, forming dialogues about real world problems for positive social change through everyday social practice—such as sharing masala chai together.

Next week, join us for the Fall 2026 Visiting Artist Colloquium public lecture on Wednesday, October 21st at 5pm with C Schliebener Muñoz, hosted by the Chazen Museum of Art at the Chazen Auditorium! Reserve your seat now!

A Chilean-born, trans, and intersex visual artist and educator based in Brooklyn, Catalina Schliebener Muñoz’s research and collage-based practice extends across multiple media, including work on paper, sculpture, installations, and mixed-media murals. Their work focuses on everyday images and objects related to popular constructions of childhood and adolescence and explores and interrogates learned stereotypes around gender, sexuality, class, and nationalism. Children’s books, cartoons, movies, pedagogical objects, costumes, and games are frequent sources of material in their work.

Schliebener Muñoz’s work has been exhibited internationally including solo shows at OLYMPIA (2025), Queens Museum (2024), Mattress Factory Museum (2024), BGSQD (2022, 2016), Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) (2021), HACHE (2017), Point of Contact (2016), Centro Cultural Matta | Chile (2015), fundacionestebanlisa (2014), Centro Cultural de España en Chile (2011), Galería Bech, Santiago, Chile (2006), among others.

In addition, Schliebener Muñoz has extensive teaching experience, from early childhood education to undergraduate education, on topics ranging from philosophy and art theory to art instruction in schools, studios, and museum settings. They are currently a teaching artist with the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and as a visiting faculty at Rhode Island School of Design and Montclair State University. They earned a BA in Philosophy and BFA from Universidad ARCIS (Santiago, Chile).
