Next week, join us for the first Fall 2026 Visiting Artist Colloquium public lecture of the semester on Wednesday, September 9th at 5pm with Jim Ga***rd, hosted by the Chazen Museum of Art at the Chazen Auditorium! Reserve your seat now!

New York-based artist Jim Ga***rd explores the possibilities and boundaries of abstraction, adapting languages of formalism, geometry, ornament, and iconography. He interlayers motifs from both man-made and organic structures, finding connections between engineered and naturally occurring patterns. Recontextualizing symbols from our visual culture, his work resonates in ways that are specific yet enigmatic, inviting multiple readings.

Ga***rd manipulates heavy watercolor paper through processes of addition and removal—cutting, bending, and scraping—to create his multidimensional surfaces. His singular approach to image-making encompasses painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture. Working primarily in monochrome, he focuses on effects of light and shadow cast upon raised edges, volumetric forms, and surface textures. Through this formal exploration, Ga***rd seeks out a sense of harmony and rightness among shapes that appear otherwise idiosyncratic.

Ga***rd has had solo exhibitions at Sperone Westwater, Deanna Evans Projects, Gregory Lind Gallery, AMT Torri & Geminian in Milan, and baileygallery, among others. Selected group shows include DC Moore Gallery, Weatherspoon Art Museum, Carré de Baudouin, LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions), and BAM Film. He has completed residencies at Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, MacDowell, and Yaddo. He received his MFA from UC Berkeley and a BA from UNC Greensboro.

He is currently represented by DC Moore Gallery in New York, where he will have his first solo exhibition with the gallery in the spring of 2027.

Boucher Ostraff’s artwork is centered on finding the sacred in daily repetition and life at home. She grew up in Utah and received a BFA in studio art with an emphasis in painting from Brigham Young University. She is working toward an MFA at UW–Madison.

Through sculpture, installation, video, drawing, & public intervention, Pei-Hsuan Wang’s practice traces kinship shaped by migration, memory, & the interplay between personal & canonized histories. Weaving bio(mytho)graphical narratives, folklore, & cultural artifacts born of Asia-Pacific geopolitics, her work reflects on how meaning is carried & reconstructed across generations.

Furniture maker, artist, & educator Wendy Maruyama has spent more than 5 decades creating innovative, boundary-pushing work. Rooted in traditional craft, her ongoing wildLIFE Project confronts the endangerment of elephants following a research trip to Kenya—a powerful work that merges craftsmanship with activism & storytelling.

A scholar of contemporary studio craft, material culture, decorative arts, & design, Perry Price is the Executive Director of the international Haystack School, a research & studio program. Inviting visiting artists & scholars across the sciences, literature, music, & the visual arts to spend 2 weeks focusing on their work, Haystack functions as a ʻthink-tankʼ in looking at craft.

Opening tomorrow from June 18th to July 25th, see Dani F. Hughes’s intergenerational field study Drying Pond at the Holland Area Arts Council Armstrong Gallery, and attend the reception this Friday, June 19th from 5:30-7pm!

In her exhibit photographic artist Dani F. Hughes creates a powerful dialogue between art, science, and family lineage by pairing her father’s childhood book, Pond Life, with her own multi-disciplinary practice of analog photography, printmaking, and handmade paper. Rooted in her upbringing in rural Michigan and her current practice as an MFA candidate and Photography lecturer at the UW–Madison, Hughes revisits the Charlotte, Michigan pond of her youth to document gradual, climate-driven transformations—such as receding water levels and longer summers—that mirror larger themes of loss, resilience, and adaptation between bodies and landscapes. By intertwining her father's early illustrations and natural science lessons with her own imagery, natural material experimentation, and poetic snippets derived from scientific descriptions, Hughes transforms strict observation into a deeply personal yet ecological archive. Signals in Flux is an immersive installation that translates environmental data from a year of satellite data, captured by NOAA-21, a joint NASA/NOAA satellite system, into a dynamic field of light and sound.

In this iteration of the Signals installation, a year of North American wildfire data involving luminosity, frequency, and temporal fluctuation is rendered into dynamic visual outputs through Max/MSP Jitter and paired with a spatialized soundscape.
