This summer, the UW–Madison Department of Animal and Dairy Sciences brought on Danielle Brown as a new coach for the Dairy Cattle Judging Team! Brown, who brings extensive industry experience and a strong background in dairy cattle evaluation, will work closely with current coaches Brian Kelroy and Trent Olson throughout the 2026–27 academic year.

Ashley Tarcin, M.S. Dept. of Animal and Dairy Sciences, University of Wisconsin – Madison won the graduate student oral presentation award in the Microbiology and Food Safety category at the Poultry Science Association 2026 meeting in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for her oral presentation “Assessing the Impact of Feed and Water Withdrawal in Poultry Production Processes Through Litter, Carcass, and Gastrointestinal Microbiome”. She is a member of Dr. Ricke’s laboratory. Please join us in congratulating her!

This past week we hosted 63 students from 6 states and 19 Wisconsin counties for Badger Dairy Camp! Students engaged in hands-on workshops related to the four priority areas of the Dairy Innovation Hub, dairy judging, and recreational activities across the UW-Madison campus. To wrap up our Dairy Science Abroad Highlight, we’re excited to feature Dairy Science major Kelsey Hardy from Dodgeville, Wisconsin, who is currently studying abroad in Ireland! Through the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Kelsey is spending her semester at University College Dublin in the School of Agriculture & Food Science, gaining both academic and hands-on experience.

While abroad, Kelsey has had the unique opportunity to work night shifts during lambing season at UCD Lyons Farm, assisting with lambing and animal care on a leading research farm. Beyond the farm, she has enjoyed traveling throughout Ireland, with Killarney and County Kerry standing out as her favorite destinations. From the coastal views in Di**le to the scenery at Inch Beach, she has loved experiencing Ireland’s landscapes and rural culture.

Kelsey encourages other students to consider studying abroad as a chance for both personal and professional growth. She recommends taking full advantage of new experiences and exploring as much as possible, no matter the length of the program.

To kick off our Dairy Science Abroad Highlight, we're excited to feature one of our two Dairy Science majors currently studying abroad, Brianna Meyer from Chilton, Wisconsin! UW-Madison offers a variety of opportunities for students to expand their education beyond campus, and she is taking advantage of that this semester in Bologna, Italy through the Bologna Consortium Studies Program with Indiana University.

She has loved exploring Bologna's beautiful architecture, especially the iconic porticos that line the city's streets. One of her favorite experiences has been attending a National Dairy Show with Brown Swiss breeders, where she joined the show crew and had the opportunity to show, along with visiting their farm in Valdobbiadene. Her advice is to study the language before you arrive and take advantage of every opportunity to explore.

Kicking off another feature in our Freshman Dairy Food and Animal Management spotlight series, we’re excited to highlight Emily Schmidt from Delavan, Wisconsin. Emily chose the University of Wisconsin–Madison after falling in love with the campus during her tour and was drawn to the unique opportunity to experience a big city while still having hands-on work with cows right on campus.

So far, her favorite part of UW-Madison has been the strong sense of community, building connections through clubs and professors who make the campus feel like home. Through her involvement in the Badger Dairy Club, Emily has found her place by connecting with others who share her passion for the dairy industry while gaining valuable networking opportunities through guest speakers and conferences.
