Leadership transitions are more than a change in title!

Leadership transitions are an opportunity to celebrate the people who shape our Society and those who will lead it into the future.

At the 2026 SWST–KSWST Convention in Seoul, Francesco Negro officially passed the presidency of the Society of Wood Science and Technology to Matthew Schwarzkopf.

Over the past year, Francesco has led SWST with dedication, helping strengthen our international community and advancing the Society's mission. Thank you, Francesco, for your leadership, commitment, and service.

As our new President, Matthew brings not only scientific expertise in wood anatomy and mechanics, but also a deep appreciation for the community that SWST has built.

"SWST has helped me keep up with progress in the field while staying connected with peers around the world. I wanted to give that same opportunity and experience to others." – Matthew Schwarzkopf

Interestingly, their SWST journeys began a decade apart:

🌍 Matthew Schwarzkopf attended his first SWST conference in Austin, Texas (2013), where he discovered not only a "Turtle Pond" on campus but also a global network that would shape his career through collaborations, friendships, and professional opportunities.
🌍 Francesco Negro joined his first SWST conference in Asheville, North Carolina (2023). He describes the experience as "a continuous discovery", from inspiring presentations to meeting colleagues from around the world. By the end of the first day, he was so energized (and exhausted!) that he simply collapsed on his hotel bed.

Their stories remind us that SWST is more than a professional society, it is a community where scientific collaboration, mentorship, and lifelong friendships begin.

Please join us in thanking Francesco Negro for his outstanding service as President and in congratulating Matthew Schwarzkopf as he begins his term as SWST President.

Here's to the next chapter of SWST!
